Although Porky's is adver
tised as "the funniest movie
ever made about growing up," it
only partially lives up to the
billing.
Growing up is not really a
part of the film, which delves
into the hi-jinks of teenagers
and their high school experi
ences.
But writer-director Bob Clark
never intended the film to be a
study in growing up in the
1950s. What he did plan was to
tro is prevented from taking over
an empire.

funny, yet deep
make a film that would let its
audience get away from it all.
And it's easy to get away and
caught up in Porky's humor.
The film is funny — so funny,
in fact, that it had members of
the audience practically rolling
in the aisles.
Comedy is not the only pur
pose of the film, however. Clark
develops multiple sub-plots
which deal with serious topics,
handling them in such a way as
to retain the comedic rhythm.
Clark escaped from a trap
many films about the '50s-era
fall into — racial interaction.
While some would charge
prejudice or discrimination for
his limited use of blacks — one
on screen for maybe two mi
nutes — it gives the film credibil
ity, especially considering its
South Florida setting.
The other actors, although
they are not great, are energetic
and keep the film moving for
ward.
They represent virtually ev
ery type of personality and give
the audience someone they can
recognize or identify with,
which further hooks the audi
ence into following the exploits
of the cast.
The film is not without flaw,
however.
Actions ‘and dialogue in the
film, although fine in today's
permissive efforts on the screen,
do not accurately represent the
time in which the film is set.
Basically, the film accom
plishes its goals .
In addition, the soundtrack is
above average for a low-budget
film, provided you like '50s
music, and greatly enhances
some of the slower parts of the
film.
If you have some time to kill
and feel like having a fairly good
time, seeing Porky's is worth the
effort.
