agement of the district adminis
trative structure.
Position 2:
Carol Morris is a housewife
and has worked as a teacher aid,
bus driver and in school activi
ties such as the Parent-Teacher
Organization.
The school district needs to
create a positive drug and alco
hol education and enforcement
program which will result in the
elimination of drugs within the
district, she said.
In addition, improvement of
the vocational education prog
ram and of facilities and educa
tion for the handicapped are im
portant, she said.
She also said there is a need
for increased communication
between the school board, pa
rents and teachers to create a
more open and professionalized
service to the district.
Dr. Herman D. Brown is a
professor in the agricultural
education department at Texas
A&M. He taught in public
schools for three years, was a
junior high school principal and
an assistant school superinten
dent for two years.
Continued emphasis must be
placed on the basics — reading
and arithmetic — especially at
the elementary level, he said.
Brown credited the current
school board with its long-range
planning and the savings the
taxpayer will experience as a re
sult.
Dr. Joe W. Templeton has 14
years experience in university
level education and is an associ
ate professor in the veterinary
pathology department at Texas
A&M.
He supports programs which
will allow teachers to develop
themselves more fully and re
ward them with higher salaries
and benefits and relieve them
from non-classroom duties.

TAYLOR, Texas — Athletic,
attractive and 17, Gina Reichen-
bach never cared for the con
stant advances of an unem
ployed janitor 10 years her
senior.
But police said Aracdio Tor
res continued his “crush” on her
despite two years of complaints
by the high school track student,
her parents and friends about
his persistent attempts to gain
her favor.
Taylor Police Chief S.G.
Bengston said Torres compiled
a lengthy arrest record for sev
eral minor offenses, but police
could never do much about his
obsession with Miss Reichen-
bach — until Tuesday.
That was the day the obses
sion turned into tragedy for
Taylor, a central Texas town of
13,000.
A murder charge alleges
Torres, 27, fatally stabbed Miss
Reichenbach six times on a high
school practice field in full view
of more than 50 other students
and members of her track team.
A grand jury was to receive the
case today.
“A man is in jail, and the girl is
dead. It’s a tragedy,” Bengston
said. “It’s one of those things no
one can stop.”
Bengston said Torres, who
lives across the street from the
victim’s grandfather, signed a
written statement admitting the
killing. He said investigators
never doubted the motive.
“He had a crush on this girl,”
Bengston said. “She, of course,
never cared anything about him.

“We had numerous reports
about him trying to talk with
her, riding a bicycle in the area
where she was, stopping and
trying to talk to her,” he said.
“Then, of course, she didn’t
want to have anything to do with
him. It made him bitter.
“That’s what it stemmed
from.”
The Rev. Dan Marek, a friend
of the victim’s family, said police
had been told repeatedly that
Torres was bothering Gina.
“There is nothing they could
do unless he threatened her life
or made any physical assault to
ward her,” Marek said.
Police said the assault came
Tuesday when Torres waited
for Gina after school and stab
bed her before onlookers could
help.
