The exhibition is being pre sented in conjunction with the annual Texas Designer/Crafts- |men Conference, which will be held at Texas A&M University April 2 through April 4. Thirty-one state artists are represented by the 50 pieces of textile and ceramic art works on display. The works were chosen bv independent designer Mau reen McGuire, who was asked to judge this year’s show. All TDC members were in vited to submit one slide of as many as three of their works, to be judged by McGuire for the competition. “I looked for a reasonable ba lance between originality of statement, quality of design, ex cellence in craftship and the artistic vision to put it all together in a good presenta tion,” McGuire said in statement in a TDC brochure. Three $100 awards went to Diane Falkenhagen of Galves ton, Phillip Hollier of Austin and Gene Hester of Houstin. Three $50 awards went to Mark Diamond of Houston, Linda Genet of Austin and Linda Greaves of College Station. Two honorable mention awards went to VVynona Alexander of Killeen and Ishmael Soto of Lexington. The annual conference offers Texas craftsmen an opportunity to meet with other craftspeople throughout the state. Any stu dent with a valid I.D. may regis ter until 9 a.m. Saturday morn ing at the 2nd floor Conference Desk in Rudder Tower for $25. The registration fee for non students is $50. The conference will begin Friday with an orientation at U.S. District Court to hear childcare suit th United Press International DALLAS — A suit to deter mine whether Garland Inde pendent School District should pav the $3,000 monthly cost of caring for an autistic child will be heard in U.S. District Court April 5. Vickie Wilks, whose 9-year- old son Sterling Wilks requires a helmet and boxing gloves to keep from injuring himself, con tends federal law requires the school system to board the boy at a school in nearby Richardson. A state-appointed hearing officer supported her position in a ruling in February . But school officials, faced with $3,000 monthly tuition at Lvnne Developmental Center, filed suit challenging that ruling in 305th Family District Court March 2. The question hangs on a fed eral law requiring school dis tricts to provide handicapped children with “appropriate” education. Wilks’s attorney, James C. Todd, said that means the Gar land district should provide the best training available, in this case at the Lynne center. But Garland school attorney Earl Luna contends the school can provide care during school hours, but it is up to the parent to care for the child at other times. Wilks said the boy was making progress during his two years at the Lynne center, but has re gressed since financial strain forced her to remove him from the Garland school. The school district contends that if she can not care for him at home, the boy should be sent to a state school. PROFESSIONAL CAREER SEMINAR DATE * SAT. APRIL 3 TIME * 9:00 A.M.
