Coogs nip women’s tennis team 5-4; Aggies now 7-8
Coach David Kent gave a tot
ally accurate description of the
Aggie women’s tennis team’s
performance after its loss Tues
day to the Houston Cougars.
“We came within an eyelash
of winning, but they were just a
little bit better,” Kent said. “The
team played much better than it
has in a long time, and it was

against a good team.”
And a good team it is. Hous
ton’s record,12-3 for the season,
seems to belong in a different
league than that of Texas A&M,
which has a 7-8 overall record
and a 2-2 conference record.
But the Aggies split six singles
matches and dropped two of
three doubles matches to lose by
only one, 5-4. Texas A&M lost
both No. 1 matches, as Lili Fer
nandez lost to UH’s Margaret
Redfearn 6-1,7-6, in singles and
the pair of Maylyn Hooten-Pam
Hill lost the top doubles match
to Redfearn and Mary von
Tungeln 6-3, 7-5.
Kent said that Amy Closs,
who defeated von Tungeln 3-6,
6-4, 7-6 in the No. 2 singles com-'
tielition, played well and “kept
her poise the whole match.”
Other scores from the Texas
A&M-UH competition:
— Joy Tacon (UH) del. Pam
Hill 6-4', 6-7, 6-1
— Cathy Tyrell (UH) del.
Teresa Landry 1-6, 7-5, 6-4
— Laura Hanna (Texas
A&M) def. Kim Censler 6-4, 6-3

Dallas, 99-95

HOUSTON — In these times of mounting playoff pressure,
Houston coach Del Harris was relieved to come out with a victory
over the Dallas Mavericks Tuesday.
“Let me start by simply saying that a win is always nice, even
though it may not look so pretty,” Harris said of Tuesday’s 99-95
victory. “I was very concerned about this game because we were
just returning from a very productive road trip and the tendency is
you don’t play your best game.”
His concern was unwarranted, as Moses Malone scored 38
points Tuesday night, two of them on a 12-foot jump shot with 20
seconds left to play, and grabbed 20 rebounds.
Elvin Hayes added 27 points, including two f ree throws with one
second left, and 14 rebounds.
Jim Spanarkel led the Mavericks with 21 points coming off the
bench.
