Four MSC committees
to ask for subsidies
byjohna Jo Maurer
Battalion Staff
The MSC Council will hear
proposals from four commit
tees requesting funding from
MSC Development and the
enrichment fund tonight at
7:30 in MSC 2 Hi.
Proposed requests for
funds from the enrichment
fund must he approved by the
council. The enrichment fund
was started by a group of for
mer students interested in
supplementing the MSC
Council budget for programs
and projects and to help start
new programs.
The Awards Banquet
Committee is asking for an en
richment fund subsidy for
awards, decorations, prog
rams and brochures for the
April 3 banquet. This banquet
is funded totally by ticket sales
and donations, not student
service fees, Council Presi
dent Doug Dedeker said.
MSC Basement is request
ing funds to improve the
acoustic quality in
“Rumours.”
The MBA/Law Day Com
mittee is requesting an enrich
ment fund subsidy to counter
deficits experienced at this
year’s program.
Dedeker said this request
may meet with opposition at
tonight’s meeting. He said the
purpose of the enrichment
fund is not to bail out a com
mittee, but to aid in the de
velopment of new MSC prog
rams and projects.
MSC Spring Leadership
Committee will ask the enrich
ment fund board of directors
to underwrite a $2,253 loss
sustained this year. This prog
ram is funded through dona
tions, but the committee has
not broken even yet, Dedeker
said.
The committee will try to
raise the money themselves by
the fall semester. Enrichment
fund subsidy — if the propos
al is approved — will cover
whatever is not raised by then,
Dedeker said.
As part of the council’s con
tinuing appointment of new
officers, nominations will be
heard for unfilled positions of
two directorate chairmen, two
council officers and six pro
ject chairmen.
Income tax deadline nears
VITA to offer free aid
by Kellie Kurtin
Battalion Reporter
Many students begin to feel
panic-stricken as the deadline
for income tax returns draws
near — but help is on the way.
Students and people with
lower incomes will be able to get
assistance in completing their in
come tax returns from members
of Beta Alpha Psi, the Texas
A&M chapter of the National
Accounting Honor Fraternity,
at a booth in the Memorial Stu
dent Center. The service will be
free.
Volunteers in a group called
VITA, or Volunteer Income
Tax Assistants, will answer ques
tions and discuss problems with
people from April 5 to April 15.
“VITA is sponsored by the
Internal Revenue Service and
administered by various groups
located around the country,”
Kyle C. Mann, Beta Alpha Psi
president said. “And this is an
annual event for us at A&M.
“Students can come with all of
their different information and
problems,and we’ll correct them
if it’s necessary. Basically, this is
a question-and-answer session.”
VITA can help anyone with
1040 or 1040A forms, Mann
said.

Ex-chemistry department head
to return to A&M in summer

Battalion Reporter
Former head of the Texas
A&M Department of Chemis
try, Dr. Choo-Seng Giam, will
leave his post as dean of the Col
lege of Science at the University
ol Texas at El Paso and return to
Texas A&M University this
summer.
“Offically I just went on leave
and am now returning,” Giam
said.
Giam is a leading researcher
in environmental organic che
mistry and cited problems with
his many research projects as his
reason for returning to Texas
A&M.
“I have a very large research
group with over $1 million in
grants, and there were some se
rious logistical problems in mov
ing it to El Paso,” Giam said.
Giam left Texas A&M last
year on a leave of absence to
head UTEP’s College of Science.
Donald Bowen, UTEP assis
tant to the vice president of
academic affairs, said the uni
versity has adequate facilities for
Giam’s projects.
But Bowen said Giam had
trouble convincing some of his
employees to move to El Paso.
“We made every attempt
within the limits of this universi
ty to keep him,” Bowen said.
“We are very upset about his
leaving because we have never
had a man of Dr. Giam’s stature
here before.”

Dallas County
group endorses
judicial candidates
United Press International
DALLAS — The chairman of
i organization of Dallas Goun-
lawversand businessmen said
; believes the newly formed
oup will be a significant tool in
iding voters in selecting non-
inisan judicial candidates.
Forrest Smith, head of the
lommittee for a Qualified J udi-
iarv, said he believes the
roup's endorsements ultimate-
will be more significant than
the Dallas Bar poll, which judi
cial candidates traditionally
blue used in their campaign li
terature.
The CQJ Friday announced
its endorsements in contested
judicial primary races.
However, Smith said the
group did not back candidates in
six of those races because a two-
thirds quorum of the 150-
member committee was needed.
