Women golfers second
in Carolina tournament
The Texas A&M women’s
golf team placed second in the
ady Paladin tournament and
the men finished eighth in the

Two Aggies placed in the
women’s tournament: Shirley
Furlong was fourth with a 222

with a 223 total. Coach Kitty

etition was hosted by Furman
University in Greenville, S.C.
The University of Georgia
won the tournament with a 54-
lole score <aC &T?, Texas AScM
was second at 902 and the Uni
versity of Miami was third with
906.
Austin’s weather played a
major role in the men’s tourna
ment, hosted by the University
of Texas. Only 36 holes were
played because of rain.
Jacky Lee led the men with a
tw'o-round 142 to place third in
the tournament. Gary Krueger
shot a 151, Kel Devlin shot 152,
Danny Briggs shot 153 and Brad
Jones shot 159.

Pitching made the difference
Sunday as the Texas Aggies split
a double-header with TCU in
Olsen Field, losing the first
game 8-6 and winning the
second game 13-5.
In the first game, Texas
A&M outhit the Horned Frogs
9-7, but TCU was aided by nine
walks given up by four Aggie
pitchers.
“The bases on balls killed us,”
Head Coach Tom Chandler said
after the game. “Any time you
score six runs in a seven-inning
game you usually win, but the
walks really hurt us,” he said.
Two of those nine walks were
given up by starting pitcher Phil
lip Taylor in the top of the first
inning. Taylor was relieved in
that inning after also giving up
three hits and four runs.
“I don’t think Taylor warmed
up enough,” Chandler said.
Sherman Corbett, who re
lieved Taylor, did no better, giv
ing up four runs in the third
inning on two hits and three
walks. Corbett was relieved in
the fifth inning by Gerry Salinas,
who combined with Rock King
to keep the Horned Frogs score
less the rest of the game.
Texas A&M scored two of its
runs in the third inning when
Ronnie Risinger reached first on
a fielder’s choice, Dave Kennard
walked and Grant Priess hit a
line-drive single to right field.
In the fifth inning, the Aggies
scored four more runs when
Bobby Beach walked and was
brought in on a single by Kevin
Smith. Brad Hisle and Kennard
then drew walks to load the
bases. Priess then singled to
bring in Smith and Hisle, and
Joe Szekely singled in Kennard.
Those four runs narrowed
the TCU lead to only two but the
Aggies fell short in their com-

seventh inning.
Chris Leiss was the winning
pitcher for the Horned Frogs
while Taylor took the loss for the
Aggies.
In the second gannj, David
Flores held the Horned Frogs to
five runs on eight hits in throw
ing his first complete game of
the year.
“Better pitching made the dif
ference in the second game,”
Dave Kennard
Chandler said. “David did a real
good job.”
TCU coach Willie Maxwell
also credited Flores for pitching
well.
“He showed a lot of poise
going the distance,” he said. “He
seemed to get stronger as the
game wore on.”
Flores was aided by strong hit
ting by his teammates, as every
player in the starting lineup had
at least one hit. Texas A&M
compiled a total of 19 hits. Ken
nard went 4-for-5, tailing just
short of the Southwest Confer
ence record for most hits in a
single game, five. Kennard also
went 2-for-4 in the first game
and scored a total of five runs in
both games.
The losing pitcher for the
Horned Frogs in the second
game was David Shelburn, who
gave up seven runs to the Aggies
in the first two innings.
The Aggies and the Horned
Frogs played five innings of a
game on Friday but the game
was called because of rain with
the score tied at seven. The
game will not count in the SWC
standings but will count in each
team’s statistics.
The double-header played
Sunday was originally scheduled
to be played Saturday but was
postponed, also because of rain.
The Aggies, now 21-8 for the
season and 3-5 in the SWC, will
play a double-header Tuesday
afternoon at 1 against the Uni
versity of Oklahoma.
