Christlieb Sports Editor Bob Brock couldn’t be happier about his team’s progress tl weekend at the UTA Invitational softball tournament. The coach of the Aggie women’s softball team hasn’t had to worry about his pitching so far during the spring season. Brocks pitchers have gone through 20 games without much toil anti trouble. Oh, sure, pitchers McDonald and Lori Stoll have scattered a few runs and endured some 1-0 victories when Aggie hits were hardto Find. But for the most part, opposing hitters have found the two Texas A&M pitchers nearly flawless. Brock can only wonder what his pitching staff would be likeif freshman pitcher Lisa Martinez, 13-0 in the fall and 2-0 in the spring, hadn’t withdrawn from school two weeks ago. But what Brock found to his liking in the Aggies’ four-game sweep of the UTA tourney wasn’t fired by his pitchers toward their opponents. Instead, Brock was pleased about what came off die bats of his hitters. “I think the high point of the weekend was that the bats are starting to come around,” Brock said. “The pitching continuesto be strong, and we showed some good speed with quite a few stolen bases. The players excecute real well, but when the hitting come along, you can really do a lot of things as far as bunting those kinds of things go. “It seems like the more consecutive games we have, the betterwe hit the ball. We’re still having a lot of 1-0 games, but in a lot of those games, the other team doesn’t even get a runner on base.” By defeating New Mexico once, Indiana twice and UTA once, Texas A&M raised its season record to 19-1. Brock had reason to like the Aggies’ offensive production. The team, hitting .241 for the season, hit .307 in the tournament, which was shortened by two games because of rain. McDonald defeated New Mexico 1-0 in the tourney’s firstgame. striking out 10 in a two-hitter. The Aggies, who had five hits in the game, scored when shortstop Carrie Austgen singled and Linda Lancaster hit an RBI double. Stoll struck out 14 of the 22 batters she faced, giving up onlyone hit in a 4-0 victory over Indiana. The Aggies scored three of their runs in the seventh inning, when Josie Carter reached on a fielder choice and was moved to second on a grounder by Patti Holthaus Austgen singled to put runners on second and third, and Lan caster singled in both runs on an 0-2 count with two outs. An RBI single by catcher Gay McNutt brought in the final run of the game McDonald pitched a six-hitter and struck out two in the nest game as the Aggies defeated the Hoosiers again 7-1. Texas AKM scored all of its runs in the second inning, with Carter ended the inning with a two-run home run over the left field fence. Other RBI hits in the inning included Austgen’s single, Mel Pritchard's two-run double, Iva Jackson’s triple and Mary Lou Youngbloods single. Stoll Finished the tourney with a 2-1 four-hit victory over UTA. The junior had 12 strikeouts, Carter had an RBI triple and McNutt had an RBI triple to bring in the Aggies’ runs.
