DALLAS — African bush-
men, perhaps reacting to en
croaching tribes, may have
established strong territorial
rights 10,000 years ago and thus
formed one of man’s earliest so
cial organizations, an anthropo
logist says.
“Territorial rights have sigui-
fiegnt social consequences,” said
Dr. Garth Sampson, who con
ducted his research in his home
country of South Africa while on
leave from Southern Methodist
University.
“When there were few hu
mans on earth, there were no
territories,” he said. “1 think hu
mans became territorial beings
during the last 10,000 years.
“The more crowded people
are, the more territorial they be
come. When hunters have lots of
room and plenty of food and wa
ter, they are friendly and some
what lax about boundaries. But
when hunters are crowded and
hungry, they become aggressive
and hostile toward each other.
“We find the echoes of the
hunters’ behavior through hu
man history in the violent and
irrational defense of tenitories.
A Contemporary example is the
hostility among neighborhood
youth gangs in today's super-
crowded ghettos. - '
Sampson spent 15 months in
South Africa studying the pie-
history of hnshmen in a 300-
square-mile area. He mapped
camping sites and ten itorial
boundaries used by hunting
bands between 200 and 1,000
years ago.
“Hunters don't wander at
random,” he said. “They all live-
in hunting bands composed of
groups of families that own then-
own territory. This was true of
the early bushrnen and it is true
of their present-chOdi
