After his college career, Davis
las drafted by the Houston
I ockets, and later played for
I olland in the European Bas-
litball League. After spending
1)77-79 as a graduate assistant
|iach for Metcalf, Davis became
full-time assistant before the

Newbury said that Davis had
been contacted by WTC about
the position “around the first of
the month,” and that he was one
of six prospects interviewed for
the job. The members of the
board of trustees voiced support
for Davis, Newbury said, and
“were all impressed” with his
qualifications.
“His peer respect borders on
the unbelievable,” Newbury
said. “I talked with dozens of
people on and off (Davis’) re
sume sheet, and there wasn’t
even the slightest negative com
ment about him. Coach Metcalf
gave him the highest recom
mendation.”
Davis becomes the Wester
ners’ third coach in the past four
years, following Nolan Richard
son and Larry Dunaway.
Richardson led WTC to a 37-0
record and the national junior
college title in 1979-80, and now
coaches at the University of
Tulsa.
Dunaway, who coached at
WTC the past two seasons after
leaving a similar post at San
Marcos High School, resigned
during the last week of this sea
son. The Westerners had sub-
.500 records both years after
having won the national cham
pionship under Richardson.
Newbury said that Davis, who
signed a contract with the col
lege Monday, will not take over
the coaching post immediately.
“We know that he has com
mitments to which he feels
strongly at Texas A&M ... and
that’s to be worked out,” New
bury said. “I feel that for a time,
he can recruit for both schools.
“The offer was 95 percent
made about two weeks ago, but
not until today was the contract
signed. We feel very fortunate to
have Coach Davis.”

**Jones injured 1-23; out season
The list of applicants for the
job included “people from all
ranks outside of pro,” Newbury
said. Davis had applied for the
WTC coaching position two
years ago after Richardson took
over at Tulsa, but Dunaway was
selected.
The search for the WTC
coach began Feb. 26, Newbury
said, when applications were
First accepted. The WTC presi
dent said that since the March 15
application deadline, as many as
15 inquiries have been made ab
out the job.
WTC, which opened only 11
years ago, has won the national
junior college championship
twice. The Westerners have
been involved in the National
Junior College Association of
America playoffs four times
during the school’s existence.
WTC’s athletic groups com
pete in the 10-team Western
Junior College Athletic Associa
tion, which includes these
schools: Midland, Odessa, Ho
ward, South Plains, Frank Phil
lips, Clarendon, Amarillo,
Hobbs, N.M., and Roswell, N.M.
Military Institute.
Newbury said the school has
high hopes for Davis, known
best for his recruiting ability.
“We hope that it will be an
important chapter in his life and
that it will be an important chap
ter in the history of the universi
ty,” Newbury said.
“None (of the applicants) has
impressed me more than Barry
Davis. It’s been a refreshing and
exciting search.”
Metcalf said Monday night
that the WTC coaching positon
is a great opportunity for Davis.
“He wants head coaching ex
perience, and it’s a good job for
him,” Metcalf said. “Barry’ll do
an excellent job for them. It’s a
school with a good reputation
for basketball.
“I talked to (Newbury) about
10 days ago and we agreed that
Barry could recruit for both
schools until after the signing
date. I think they decided on
him before he decided to accept
the position.”
Metcalf said he’s in no hurry
to find Davis’ replacement.
“I’ve been talking to people,
and I’ve had people call... things
like that (the opening) leak out,”
Metcalf said. “We have some
ideas on what direction we’re
going to go. We’re not in any
hurry ... we’re going to finish up
recruiting.
“Basically, what we’ll be look
ing for is someone who can re
cruit and someone who can
coach defense, since that’s what
Davis did. Assistant coaches
move on frequently, and I think
he’s very qualified for that job.
“It’s a shame he can’t be play
er/coach,” Metcalf joked.
Metcalf said the fact that
Davis doesn’t have a perfect re
cord or a championship to du
plicate may be an advantage for
him.
“I think that’s a plus for Bar
ry, because they’ll be hungry
again,” Metcalf said. “It’s always
tough to follow a guy who’s just
had a perfect season, so I think
he’s getting there at a good
time.”
