sports Longhorns sweep; Kansas wins one Long baseball weekend for A&M by Denise S. Sechelski Battalion Staff The Texas A&M baseball team concluded a full week of baseball Sunday when it split a double-header with the Unvier- sity of Kansas at Olsen Field. The Aggies won the first game 5-3 but lost the second 6-3. Center fielder Billy Cannon hit a two-run home run in the the bottom of the fourth inning for the first of two Aggie homers in the first game. In the bottom of the seventh inning. Grant Priess tripled to right-center field with one out. Joe Szekely then hit a home run over the left-center field wall to give the Aggies the victory. Szekely went 2-for-4 in the first game with three RBI. Sherman Corbett pitched the Entire game for the Aggies and won his third game of the season against no losses. The losing pitcher was Jim Phillips, who also pitched a complete game. The Aggies usecf three pitch ers in the second game, with starter Greg Smith getting the loss in his first decision of the year. Smith gave up four runs and lasted only two-thirds of the first inning. Gerry Salinas came on to pitch four and two-third innings and Steve Davis finished the game for Texas A&M. The Aggies scored all their runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, Mark Magee picked up an RBI by grounding out to second base. Thomas Dean Chandler then hit a dou ble to left-center field to drive in the Aggies’ other two runs. Dennis Coplin was the win ning pitcher and Matt Gibson earned a save for the University of Kansas. The Jayhawks’ re cord is now 5-8. The Aggies’ are 18-7 for the season and three of those losses came against the University of Texas Friday and Saturday in Austin. Texas A&M lost the first game Friday 11-2. David Flores, 4-1, was the losing pitcher. The Aggies lost the double-header Saturday 8-3 and 16-2. Rick Luecken and Robert Slavens were the losing pitchers, respec tively, and the losses were the first this year for the two Aggie right-handers. Luecken is 2-1 and Slavens is 3-1. Coach Tom Chandler said his team was mentally prepared to play the Longhorns but failed to produce on the field. “Our team went in there ready to play,” he said. “We just broke down in every phase of our game. Our pitching wasn’t good. Our pitchers were wild and couldn’t get the ball over the plate. “To win, you have to have good defense and good pitch ing, and we didn’t have either.” Texas is ranked fifth in the nation and is 33-0 for the season. One more Longhorn victory will tie the NCAA record for most consecutive wins in a season. The Longhorns set the current record in 1977. A&M softball team member withdraws Freshman pitcher Lisa Martinez, who posted a 13-0 record in the fall for the Texas A&M softball team and had added two more victories — a perfect game and a no-hitter — this spring, has withdrawn from Texas A&M because of academic difficulties. “It was definitely a big loss, and I was more or less shocked at the news,” Coach Bob Brock said. “She had figured very heavily into our plans for a national championship. “I hope that whatever it is she gets it straightened out and is back pitching for us in the fall.” Martinez withdrew from the University March 12.
