local Free U offers short courses Registration begins Tuesday by Lori Weldon Battalion Reporter Courses on topics f rom aero bic dance to financial planning, from guitar instruction to com puter programming are avail able as short courses f rom MSC Free University. Registration f or these courses is scheduled from 1 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday in ‘201 MSC. basic financial planning — offered for the first time this spring — deals with individual retirement accounts, invest ments and life insurance. Steven H.W. Aldrich, a registered rep resentative of a national invest ment advisory service, will teach the class. Other classes offered are: • basic Mechanics — teaches minor car repairs and mainte nance, such as lubrication, brakes and tune-ups • Beginning and Intermedi ate Guitar — teaches basic chords and playing skills, and how to play classical guitar music. Students must provide their own guitars and note books. Also available is a guitar group study class in which stu dents learn to play with a group, choosing their own songs and arrangements. • Beginning Sign Language — teaches at least 120 words; gives students an understanding of sign language. • Computer Programming — teaches basic use of computers and programming micro computers in tbe BASIC lan guage • Dance and Fitness — in cludes Dancercise, aerobics, jit terbug and country and western dancing for the beginner to the super-advanced. Dancercise is open to women only, but aero bics will allow men. Country and western classes meet at the Texas Hall of Fame. • Dating, Engagement and Marriage — deals with the de velopment of relationships f rom early dating to marriage • Defensive Driving — offered once a month, trains drivers to watch out for other drivers. Completion entitles the student to a 10 percent reduc tion in insurance payments. Re gistration for this class begins two weeks prior to the First meet ing of the class, in 216 MSC. • Judo — will be taught by Kodokan registered black belts from the Texas A&M Judo club. Open to men and women. • Personal Effectiveness Training — will help the student develop assertiveness, and the skills to improve personal and business relationships. The course is taught by licensed psychologist Kenneth R. Poenisch, and is limited to 20 people. A brochure available in the MSC Student Programs Office, provides a description of courses offered, price per course, and the times classes will meet. Prices for the courses range from $2 to $12. Because Free U courses are taught by students and local people, instructors are allowed to set their fees, class size and class schedule. Instructors may apply for a course at the Free U cubicle in the Student Programs of fice, or at registration Tuesday. Dancerci/e, country and west ern dancing, and guitar are reg ularly offered short courses. Long courses, beginning again next fall, will cover a wider varie ty of topics such as bartending and German.
