The image of the American
cowboy, long epitomized by
John Wayne and Roy Rogers,
is a myth. Dr. William Eugene
Hollon told a group of about
90 students, faculty and com

night.
In a graduate lecture co
sponsored by the Texas A&M
Department of History and
Phi Alpha Theta, the history
honor society, Hollon said the
cowboy shouldn’t be regarded
as a hero, and in reality, might
be ranked only above the cow.
Hollon, who received his
doctoral degree from the Uni
versity of Texas, gained na
tional and international rec
ognition as a scholar of the
American West during his 25-
year tenure at the University
of Oklahoma.
Hollon said many different
types of cowboys exist; for ex
ample, drugstore cowboys,
screen cowboys, rodeo cow
boys, urban cowboys, steel
cowboys, rhinestone cowboys,
concrete cowboys, midnight
cowboys and commodity cow
boys.
“But they all have very lit

real cowboy of the American
