Battalion/Page 14 March 8, 1982 sports Swimmers finish fifth in SWC Nash is Coach of the Year h by Bill Robinson Battalion Staff The Texas A&M men’s swim ming team placed fifth in the Southwest Conference Swim ming and Diving Champion ships Saturday. Aggie swimmers broke the school record in seven existing events and established records in three new events. Led by Rick Walker, who set school records in the 500- and 1650-yard freestyle and the 400- yard individual medley, the Aggies had 10 individuals place in the competition. Walker was third in the 1650- yard freestyle while Mike Hoche placed fifth in the event for the Aggies. Both the 400- and 800- yard freestyle relay teams placed fifth in the meet. Defending national cham pion the University of Texas won the SWC championship with a score of 724.5, Southern Methodist University was second with 486.5 points and the University of Arkansas finished third with 405 points. Houston was fourth with 236 points, Texas A&M fifth with 158, Texas Christian University sixth with 67, Texas Tech seventh with 65 and Rice was eighth with 30. The Aggies almost doubled their score from the 1981 cham pionships, where they had 84 points. After the meet, conference coaches named Texas A&M coach Mel Nash the 1982 SWC Coach of the Year, based upon the progress the team has made over last season. “We have made tremendous strides this year,” Nash said. “The team made a lot of prog ress over the last year. “It was a tremendous meet — we did very, very well. Lacrosse team splits games to go 6-1 The Texas A&M lacrosse team split its two games this weekend, winning Saturday over the Dallas Lacrosse Club and losing Sunday to the Bayou Lacrosse Club of Houston. The Aggies defeated the Dal las team 16-12, coming back from an early 4-1 deficit. After tying the score at 8-8, Texas A&M took a 16-10 lead in the easy victory. However, the Aggies lost to the Houston squad 12-6, falling behind 6-1 early in the game. Texas A&M has a 6-1 record and a 3-0 record in the College East Conference. In the weekend’s Texas A&M scoring, player/coach Tony Scazzero scored seven goals and had four assists. A1 Adler had three goals and two assists, and Bruce Jennings had three goals. Adding to the scoring for the Aggies were Tom Cirillo with two goals, and Carl Hays with one goal and one assist. Keith Wagstaff and Joel DeGuzman had a goal apiece.
