NEW YORK — The New
York Stock Exchange opened at
the usual time Monday in spite
of a bombing that took place late
Sunday. The Puerto Rican ter
rorist group FALN has taken
credit for the blasts.
The American stock ex
change and two other buildings
also were damaged.
A letter left near the bomb
site said the explosions were
made to protest “Yankee impe
rialism.”
The explosions came one day
before the 28th anniversary of
the March 1, 1954, attack by
Puerto Rican nationalists on the
U.S. House in which five con
gressmen were wounded by
gunfire.
The explosions came in a 30-
minute span and caused no in
juries. Tne buildings suffered
only broken glass and minor
structural damage, police said.
The FALN, dedicated to in
dependence for Puerto Rico,
claimed responsiblity for the
bombings in a multi-page com
munique that police found in a
telephone booth about 6 miles
north of Wall Street.
Police Sgt. Edward Leschack
said the first explosion occurred
at 11:25 p.m. at the headquar
ters of the Merrill Lynch stock
brokerage. Ten minutes later,
bombs exploded at the head
quarters of Chase Manhattan
bank and at the New York Stock
Exchange a few blocks away.
T'he last blast went off at 11:55
p.m. at the American Stock Ex
change.
High-powered explosives —
possibly dynamite — were used
m the bombs, he said.
Witnesses said a late model
four-door car crammed with
people was seen speeding from
the area moments after the
blasts.
Shortly after the bombing,
police said, a news agency re
ported it received a telephone
call from a man claiming to be an
FALN representative who dire
cted police to an envelope in a
telephone booth. The anony
mous caller did not mention the
blasts.
Police recovered the letter,
which they described as “a typic
al FALN communique.” Patrick
Murphy, the Police Depart
ment’s chief of operations, said
the letter mentioned the bomb
ings and decried “imperialistic
forces” opposing statehood for
Puerto Rico.
The FALN communique said
the bombings were to protest
“Yankee imperialism," Murphy
said.

Rutgers President Edward

complex — the largest clas

the same day.
The NIOSH report said the
hormone levels found in several
classrooms were higher than the
accepted industrial standard.
The hormone is known to cause
cancer in mice and is suspected
of causing uterine cancer in
women.
since 1980, when employees be

Rutgers renovated the hall’s

tests by state and federal experts
failed to pinpoint any significant
health hazards — until now.
A year-long study by the state

found a “significant excess” of
cancer among the building’s
occupants, but no common
source that could be linked to
Smith Hall.
