Eggs dormant until spring
Cold season kills fleas
by Kathy Robinette
Battalion Reporter
If the weather stays cold until
mid-March, Bryan-College Sta
tion may not have a heavy flea
infestation until May, says Ed
ward Binford, of Binford Insect
Control Service.
For the past two years, the
flea problem in Bryan-College
Station has started in March be
cause of the warm, moist springs
and light winters, Binford said.
The problem has slacked off
during the hot months of July
and August and reappeared in
early fall when the humidity is
high, he said.
Dr. Tommy Cargill, a Bryan
veterinarian, said the small,
bloodsucking insect feeds on
any warm-blooded animal, but
its favorite hosts are dogs and
cats.
After a hard freeze kills the
adult fleas, the eggs can lie dor
mant for two to eight months,
Cargill said. These eggs lie in the
soil, the dog’s or cat’s bedding,
and in the carpet, he said.
“A female can lay a couple of
hundred eggs at a time,” Cargill
said.
Fixed marriages likely
United Press International
NEW YORK — Arranged
marriages and marriages of con
venience may be due for a com
eback, says futurist author Alvin
Toffler.
In an article in Parents maga
zine, Toffler said he also expects
computer dating and cable dat
ing to increase, as people be
come more individualized.
“It’s harder to find someone
who has a similar set of values,
interests, and attributes,” he
said.
If a dog ingests a flea which is
carrying tape worm larvae, in
testinal parasitic problems can
result, Cargill said. Also, dogs
sometimes lose their hair or de
velop a secondary skin infection
because of the scratching, he
said.
To get rid of fleas, both men
said to dip the dog and spray
both the yard and house the
same day.
“You’re trying to break the
(flea’s) life cycle,” Cargill said.
Binford recommends that pet
owners wash their animal’s bed
ding often and hang it out in the
sunshine to dry.
Cargill said after the fleas are
gone, pet owners should con
tinue checking to see if fleas are
on their pets, and continue dip
ping and dusting their dogs.
Proban, a tablet given to dogs,
kills the flea when it bites the
dog. However, as a safety pre
caution, the dog should be
checked for heartworms, he
said.
Binford said after a yard is
sprayed, the animal should stay
off the surface until it dries. The
house should be closed for about
two hours after it is sprayed, he
said.
A flea’s life cycle is about
seven to 10 days, so the extermi
nators will spray once to kill the
adults and return later when the
eggs hatch.
A majority of the spraying
done last year was at duplexes
and apartments, even those
where pets are forbidden, Bin
ford said. Many pet owners let
their dogs run loose where they
pick up fleas from other dogs
and other areas, he said.
“The more animals you have
per unit of space, the more likely
you will have a flea population,”
Binford said.
