their jobs, a CFS official says.
United Way of Amarillo offi
cials said many Pantex nuclear
weapons plant employees have
canceled their contributions to
the charity because it funds sev
eral CFS programs. However,
the United Way funds are not
used by CFS for counseling
programs.
In a related development
Tuesday, the Catholic organiza
tion which helps to find jobs for
employees who wish to leave the
Pantex nuclear weapons facility,
returned $10,000 donated by a
west Texas bishop.
Bishop L.T. Matthiesen cre
ated a “Solidarity Peace Fund”
to provide financial aid to dis
affected plant workers. Matth
iesen, bishop of the Amarillo
Diocese, has been a vocal oppo
nent of the Department of Ener
gy facility, which assembles nuc
lear weapons, including the
neutron bomb.
In a statement released last
summer, he urged Pantex work
ers to quit their jobs and seek
employment in peaceful pur
suits.
CFS board president O.M.
Calhoun said in returning the
bishop’s donation his group
hoped to resolve the conflict that
developed over the fund.
Following a board meeting
Tuesday, Calhoun said the ac
tion should satisfy United Way
of Amarillo, which last week
appointed a committee to study
the funding relationship be
tween it and CFS.
Although the $10,000 dona
tion to CFS from Matthiesen was
not designated for the counsel
ing of Pantex employees, the
bishop and the CFS hoard said
returning the money was neces
sary in light of the United Way
contribution cancellations by
Pantex workers.
There was no reaction
Wednesday from Pantex or Un
ited Way officials regarding the
return of Matthiesen’s donation
and CFS’s statement that job
counseling would contit
Pantex employees.
“We cannot comprom
basic mission,” said Kan
nough, executive diretul
CFS. “We are not creas]|j|
separate job counseling)
rani (for Pantex worker!].!
same services are availaNtJ
have been available forn
her of years to oth
the community.”
CFS has reportei
several calls from
ployees interested in!
other employment.
