Founded in the mid-1950s in honor of a pioneer newspaper woman, the club has since been providing aid to a select number of career-oriented women. Named for former Houston Post society editor May Del Flagg, 90, the club was started to aid women aiming for business careers in a time when such women were rare. Since then the club has focused on giving aid to those in the nursing field. Flagg wrote a senes of articles in her Post column in 1954 ab out women striving for careers in the business field. Grateful for her effort, the women who were featured in the articles organized the club to serve as an employment agency to help women in their situation, club supporter Tina Conley said. Fund raising was done through contributions by mem bers and by auctioning stock show animals Flagg had obtained from sponsors, Conley said. Now the club focuses on providing aid. Fund raising is no longer done because the club has enough reserve funds, Con ley said. Nursing students in need of financial aid are refer.j club by dub memtien! porters. On Jan. 20, a Columbian stu dent was riding his bicycle to Blinn College when he was struck by a car. The driver of the car was charged with driving while intoxicated. Gabriel Garzon, 21, received head injuries from the accident. He later was transported to Scott and White Hospital in Temple and he is still unconscious. Garzon’s parents flew in from Columbia after receiving the news about their son. Neither the driver of the car nor Gar zon’s parents have insurance. A fund to help Garzon’s parents pay for the hospital bills was started by Arguello and a couple that helped Garzon at the acci dent scene. However, Arguello said the fund only has received about $100. “Response has not been very good,” he said. Garzon’s hospital bill now ex- Greene Gout 1 ton. 13 i Jerseyville.
