ST. LOUIS — The case of the
house-broken opossum is just
one of many bizarre tales arising
from the record winter in the
Midwest.
“We got a call from a woman
who said, ‘I don’t know if I’m
breaking the law, but I’ve got a
opossum living in my house,”’
said Suzie Sutton, who operates
the wildlife rescue center.
The woman explained she
leaves a door cracked for her
cats to go outside, and the opos
sum walked in one snowy night
and curled up under a desk in
her kitchen. The opossum also
used the exit, until a two-foot
snowfall made it impossible to
go outside.
“She just put down some pap
ers and he went over and used
them,” Sutton said of the opos
sum. “He even took one of the

The center has had several
calls from homeowners who said
squirrels, birds and raccoons
were stuck in furnace and fire
place flues, where they sought
warmth from the freezing tem
peratures.
“We had a squirrel in a piano
and another one in a beautifully
built copper wet bar,” Sutton
said. “We had to take the whole
thing apart to get him out. We’ve
had them in dryer vents and
even all the way into dryers.”
A maid in the fashionable
suburb of Ladue telephoned
E olice to say a burglar had
roken into the home of her em
ployer, who was away on a two-
week skiing vacation. Police ar
rived and found a raccoon in a
bathtub.
“He had fallen 30-something
feet down the chimney and hit
his head on a fireplace grate,”
Sutton said of the intruder. “He
needed food and a little atten
tion to his head trauma, but he’s
doing well.”
Another caller said a Great
Horned owl was eating the pro
visions being put out for other
animals.
“This woman said she had put
out marshmallows for the rac
coons and this owl kept eating
them,” Sutton said. “Can you
imagine an owl, which usually
eats mice and rats, hungry
enough to eat marshmallows?
That tells you how desperate the
situation was.”
Sutton said many of the anim
als were hungry because the
heavy snow cut off their food
supply, and she said the quick

‘Shoot first, ask later’ policy
spares Baltimore cab driver
United Press International
BALTIMORE — The city’s
chief prosecutor staunchly de
fended his “shoot first, check the
facts later” policy and said he
marges
will not file charges against a cab
driver who killed two passengers
who tried to rob him.
Taxi driver Joseph Word, 49,
shot and killed the men after
one of them pointed a .38-
caliber pistol at nis head, police
said.
The shooting Sunday night
occurred less than one week af
ter Baltimore state’s attorney
William A. Swisher told resi
dents they could use deadly
force to defend themselves.
“Whenever a person is in
real, honest fear that they, or
their loved ones, are about to be
seriously injured or killed, then
you have the right to defend
yourself,” Swisher told The
News American in an interview
published Tuesday. “And the
defense goes so far as to use fatal
force, meaning to kill the evil
doer.

“The law in Maryland says
you do not have to retreat from
your home. You have the right

Word picked up the men as

a gun at him and demanded
cash.
Word reached under the seat,
grabbed his .32-caliber revolver
and fired six shots, police said.
The two men, Michael E.
Gumbo, 24, and Dexter E. Gray,
26, both of Baltimore, died in
stantly.
The incident was the second
time in two weeks Swisher has
declined to prosecute citizens
who shot apparent wrongdoers.
Last Monday, a tenant shot and
killed an apparent burglar as the
man fled from an invalid neigh
bor’s apartment.
Swisher said his policy applies
only to clear-cut' instances of
self-defense.
