“He played so-so, but at least
he didn’t hit anyone,” quipped
Miller following the tuneup
round to the 56th LA Open.
Wednesday was a day of fun
and jokes for Miller. Today at
the Riviera Country Club the
tension begins, even for a guy
who has already won $569,827
this year, including $500,000 in
a non-tour event in Bophuthats-
wana, in south Africa.
Miller shot a course-record
14-under-par 270 to win the
event last year but said it’s
doubtful anyone will beat that
mark this year.
“People talk about how great
the Crosby is but I consider the
LA Open the Cadillac of of West
Coast tournaments,” Miller said.
“The greens at Riviera are the
most difficult to read in the
country. You can putt from one
spot and the ball will break one
way and you move your ball an
inch in one direction or another
and it might break the other
way.”
“I’d like to repeat as cham
pion here, but one reason it’s so
hard to do is the winner has to be
lucky — it’s nearly impossible to
figure the breaks.”
The LA Open has not had a
repeat winner since Arnold Pal
mer did it in 1965-66. But, both
of those tournaments were play
ed at Rancho Park Golf Course,
where the tournament moves
next year. The last to repeat at
Riviera was Ben Hogan in 1947-
48.
Trevino took advantage of
warm, sunny weather to shoot
his 6-under-nar 65 over the
sprawling, 7,029-yard Riviera
layout. Trevino had six birdies,
including four in a row. But he
also felt Miller’s tournament re
cord would be safe this year be
cause of rain eariier in the week.
“The courser is playing long,
very long, because it is wet,” Tre
vino said. “I don’t think Miller’s
record can be touched.”
The 72-hole tournament over
the par-71 Riviera course had
144 golfers teeing off this
morning.

NEW YORK — Sit back and
relax if you have been anxiously
awaiting the showdown between
Larry Holmes and Gerry
Cooney. The confrontation
won’t be settled for nearly four
months.
The WBC heavyweight title
fight scheduled for March 15
between Holmes, the champion,
and Cooney, was delivered a
knockout punch Wednesday be
cause of an injury to the challen
ger’s left shoulder. The bout was
rescheduled for June 11 at
Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
Cooney, who originally in
jured the shoulder five weeks
ago while training for an exhibi
tion bout with Joe Bugner that
later was canceled, underwent a
series of tests Wednesday and
was diagnosed by Dr. John
Bergfeld, a prominent
orthopedist from the Cleveland
Clinic, to be suffering from torn
muscles in his left shoulder.
Bergfeld said Cooney would
begin a series of strengthening
exercises, under the supervision
of his personal physician, Dr.
Jeffrey Minkoff, immediately,
and said the challenger might be
able to begin sparring within two
weeks if he responded well to
the treatments.
“He has partially torn muscles
adjacent to the rotator cuff,”
said Bergfeld, who was added to
the examination team at the re
quest of Don King, the promo
ter for Holmes. “There are sev
eral muscles in the back part of
the shoulder and many of the
fibers are torn.
"There’s always the chance he
could reinjure the shoulder in
training again, but if we bring
him along slowly the chances are
minimum. It’s the type of injury
that should heal up. I have diag
nosed similar injuries and have
been successful.”
Cooney, naturally, was dis
appointed with the postpone
ment but said that the pain was
so intense the past week he
couldn’t continue workouts.
