DETROIT — Auto sales have
plunged to their lowest level in
more than two decades and
another 6,000 autoworkers face
indefinite layoffs, indicating
even huge rebates aren’t enough
to entice Americans to buy new

Local United Auto Workers
union leaders met in Detroit
Tuesday to review a proposed
contract with Ford Motor Co.
The contract, calling for un

security, is expected to be en

Council in Chicago today.
General Motors Corp. is ex

return to the bargaining table,
but UAW President Douglas
Fraser — apparently still smart

lier this year — said Monday he
would tell GM “where to go.”
Fraser was scheduled to
address skilled trades workers in
Detroit Tuesday as part of the
meeting to look over the con

“In response to current mar

down its Fremont and South

minating a shift in Pontiac,
Mich. The closings, to begin
next month, will indefinitely idle
6,100 workers.
However, the No. 1 automak

off workers by adding shifts at
three plants that build sports
cars and trucks.
Morelhan 246,000 autowork
ers are on layoff industry-wide,
including 140,000 at GM alone.
That figure is just 2,000 short of
the record 248,000 on layoff last
summer.
GM Chairman Roger Smith
had warned there would be
more layoffs and plant closings
after reopened contract talks

GALVESTON — A federal
judge has forbidden Texas pris
on officials from intimidating
inmates who want to testify on
behalf of Eroy Brown, on trial in
the drowning of his warden who
one inmate described as violent
and dangerous.
Defense Attorney Craig
Washihgton contends Brown
acted in self-defense in a strug
gle leading to the death of War
den Wallace Pack, 54, at the
Texas Department of Correc
tions’ Ellis Unit April 4, 1981.
Ellis Unit Farm Manager Bil
ly Max Moore, 49, also died in
the struggle but no trial date has
been set yet in that case.
Prosecutors contend Brown
killed the prison officials in a
rage over a denied furlough.
Monday’s court activity was
highlighted by a contempt rul
ing from Judge Henry Dalehite,
the order issued against TDG by
a Houston federal judge and tes
timony from inmate Aubrey
Komurke, 42, of El Paso, serving
25 years.
Komurke said he knew Pack
when he was a lieutenant at the
Wynne Unit.
“His reputation was that he
was violent and dangerous (to
inmates),” Komurke said. “He
was known to be turbulent and
unpredictable. It was widely ru
mored that he carried a gun in
side the unit (which is against the
rules).
“I saw him using physical
force on another inmate,
pushing, kicking and shoving.”
Each of the eight inmates cal
led to testify before Komurke
refused to do so, saying they
would talk only if they had ade
quate protection from retalia
tion.
Dalehite ruled each in con
tempt and rejected a request to
keep them in the Galveston

County Jail rather thanreiil
ing them to TDC, sayinglltj
was too crowded.

United Press International
HOUSTON — A New York
company has been chosen to be
the new buildeT of the troubled
South Texas Nuclear Project,
replacing a firm based in Hous
ton that backed out after being
fired from two other jobs at the
plant.
Don Jordan, president of
Houston Lighting and Power
Co., announced the selection of
Ebasco Services Monday after a
meeting of the STNP partners,
but said the decision is subject to
a satisfactory conclusion of con
tract negotiations.
Work at the plant 10 miles
southwest of Bay City, has been
at a standstill since Brown &
Root was fired as architect and
manager last September. Brown
and Root then resigned as buil
der after working seven years on
the project, which was first sche
duled for completion this year.
HL&P spokesman Don Beeth
said he did not know when work
would return to full tilt. Howev
er, he said officials hoped Ebas
co could be ready to go by April
and full-scale work could be
under way by fall.
Jordan said the decision to
hire Ebasco was endorsed
unanimously by the project’s
coowners — the city of Austin,
City Public Service of San Anto
nio and Central Power and
Light Co. Ebasco was chosen
over two other finalists, Bechtel
