sports Men’s track team finishes fourth in LSU Invitational by John Wagner Battalion Staff The Texas A&M men’s track team finished fourth in a field of seven teams at the LSU Invita tional Indoor Meet Saturday. Richardson finished second in the 60-yard dash. In the field events, Jimmy Howard placed second with 7-0 3/4 in the high Although the Aggies had no first-place finishes, five of Coach Charlie Thomas’ athletes finished second. In the track events, Rod jump. Kevin McGinnis came in second in the shot, and Johnny Hector and Mike Mullins placed second in the long jump and pole vault. Hector had a 23-10 3/4 in the longjump and Mullins vaulted 15-9. The mile relay team, com prised of Richardson, Tony Tolsen, Gary Scurry and Ver non Pittman, finished second by improving its time to 3:13.05. Also helping the Aggies to fourth place were third-place finishes by Darryl Shoemake in the 1,000-yard run and Vernon Pittman in the 440-yard dash. Shoemake ran a 2:13.15 and Pittman ran a 49.02. In the team competition, the Aggies finished behind the Uni versity of Texas, LSU, and Flor ida State University. The Aggies collected 66 points. Texas led with 99, LSU had 83 and Florida State finished with 68, 2 more than the Aggies. The next meet for the Aggies will be the Southwest Confer ence indoor championships in Fort Worth on Feb. 19-20. Swim meet Aggies place second in SMU Invitational by Bill Robinson Battalion Staff Despite finishing no better than third in any event, the Texas A&M men’s swimming team placed second in the SMU Invitational this weekend. The meet was a big oppor tunity for the team’s freshmen to prove their abilities, coach Mel Nash said. “We left a lot of- big scorers at home for the meet, as did several other schools.” The meet was good prepara tion for the younger members of the team going in to the South west Conference meet in three weeks, he said, adding that he was pleased with the team’s per formance in the strong competi tion. Hosting SMU won the meet, which included six teams. The University of Houston finished third, Texas Tech fourth, TCU fifth and Baylor sixth. the 200-yard individual medley on Saturday. Sophomore transfer Bruce Woelfel led the Aggies, placing in three events. Woelfel finished fifth in the 50-yard freestyle and Woelfel placed third in the 200-yard breaststroke Sunday, while freshman Todd Robeck finished fourth and junior Jim my Jaster was sixth. Another strong performer for the Aggies was freshman Jack Fink, who finished fourth the 100-yard freestyle and Golfers look strong in Pan American tourney fifth in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore Tim Brown by Bill Robinson finished third in the event. Also turning in good indi vidual performances were junior Mike Hoche, placing fourth in the 1650-yard frees tyle, and freshman Jim Hani- gan, sixth in the 200-yard back- stroke.
