Adults working in the state’s
juvenile system are abused far
more than the youngsters they
care for, the superintendent of a
child care center said Thursday.
The youths have violent
backgrounds and resist attempts
to undergo changes in their
lifestyles, leading to confronta
tions with superivors and coun
selors, said Herschell Daney, su
perintendent of the L.E. Rader
Diagnostic, Evaluation and
Treatment Center.
“We’re trying to change lives,
and therefore you have to have
confrontations to have
changes,” Daney said. “They
come here angry. They’re mad
at the courts, at their parents.
They’ve been kicked out of
school.”
At least 60 employees at the
center have been injured by stu
dents since November 1980, he
said.

Reagan aid resigns
following charges

WASHINGTON — The Jus
tice Department is reviewing
financial matters involving
Joseph Canzeri, who resigned
Wednesday as a top White
House aide.
Canzeri has denied any
wrongdoing, but in a letter to
President Reagan said his res
ignation was in the best interest
of the Reagan administration.
A White House spokesman
said the Justice Department was
investigating both Canzeri’s
acceptance of below-market
terms for financing a $380,000
townhouse and a pair of double
billings for travel expenses.
“I’m not accused of anything,
but I don’t want to live in this
environment,” Canzeri said.
“I’d be ineffective.”
Canzeri had wide responsibil
ity for scheduling and travel
arrangements in the Reagan
administration. He was deputy
assistant to the president and
assistant to the deputy chief of
staff, Michael Deaver.
Canzeri had a massive pre
sence at the White House. Can
zeri’s strongest talent was being
able to get things accomplished
in a hurry.
In accepting Canzeri’s res
ignation, Reagan wrote: “Over
the last year and a half, you have
served not just me but our na
tion with distinction, honor and
a personal energy that knows
few parallels.”
Canzeri said pn investigation

wrongdoing. But he said he did
not want to be a “drag on a lot of
people.”
The White House had no
