DALLAS — A promoter ac
cused of bilking investors out of
$225,000, telling them the
money was going to build a
chain of flower shops, has drawn
a 20-year prison sentence.
Tuesday’s decision ended
Jackie Kalinin’s second trial on
the charges. He was convicted
and sentenced to 15 years last
July, but that conviction was
thrown out on appeal because of
an error in the judge’s instruc
tions.
1 Kalmin, who prosecutors said
maintained plush offices and ex
pensive cars and jew'elry,
approached 12 investors with a
plan to build 10 flower shops
around the city, prosecutors
said.
“He sat behind his expensive
desk and plush carpet like a
snake waiting to strike,” pro
secuting attorney Denver
McCarty said.
Kalmin opened three shops,
which quickly folded for lack of
operating funds. His lawyers
contended Kalmin was trying to
make the businesses succeed.
“These prosecutors are just
hill collectors for those who have
complaints,” defense lawyer
Ross Teter said.
Kalmin has been convicted of
theft and served a year in jail for
bilking investors in a phony car
rental scheme. He also is under
indictment in an offshore oil in
vestment scheme.
In addition to his prison sent
ence, Klamin was fined $10,000
and has $ 100,000 in judgements
filed against him by two inves
tors.
