LOS ANGELES — Five tons
of marijuana stored at police
headquarters has created a
space and odor problem in the
basement property room, but
there is no evidence of ficers are
getting “high” from the smell of
the illegal weed.
“Storing 11,200 pounds of
marijuana in the police depart
ment property room takes up a
lot of space and it’s giving out an
awful odor,” Assistant U.S.
Attorney Layn Phillips said in a
petition asking to destroy the
marijuana.
U.S. District Judge Mathew
Byrne Monday planned to hear
the motion for permission to
destroy the marijuana, which
has been photographed and
weighed for use as evidence in
the case in which it was seized.
The marijuana was confis
cated Jan. 3 in one of the biggest
drug hauls on the West Coast in
several years.

BIRMINGHAM — There
are so many people who want to
preach at the Jef ferson County
Jail that even Billy Graham
would have to stand in line.
Warden Lionel Bragan says
he is besieged by woulcl-be jail-
house preachers, and he says
some are simply looking for a
captive audience.
“They think there are 500
people up there going to hell
and they’re going to do some
thing for them,” he said.
Bragan refuses to turn thejail
chapel over completely to all the
preachers who want it because
that would mean canceling adult
basic education and special
reading classes held there now.
The jail already has Sunday
school and two Sunday church
services, mass on Wednesday,
Catholic counseling on Thurs
day, Bible study on Thursday,
Catholic services for women on
Monday, and evening services
three times a week.
Requests to preach are turned
over to the jail’s regular minis
ter, the Rev. John Olin Gay, who
says he asks would-be preachers
“Bible questions” to see if they
are qualified.
