Prosecutors recom mended Ybanez, who admitted beating an intoxicated prisoner in 1977, receive a 30-day sus pended jail term, be placed on five years probation and be for bidden to seek employment in law enforcement during that period. The guilty plea by the di vorced father of four who man ages a McAllen sporting goods store came nine days after a similar plea-bargaining agree ment between the government and former Sgt. Roberto Ramos, whose trial on the charges had ended with a jury deadlocked 10-2 for conviction. Three other ex-officers also were indicted, and jury selection began in their combined cases in U.S. magistrate’s court Wednes day. Scheduled for trial next Monday are Tom W. Carter, Jaime E. OFFICIAL NOTICE United Press International HOUSTON — With attitudes toward homosexuality chang ing, police say they are getting more male complaints about homosexual rape — a crime they say always has occurred, but usually went unreported. “Several years ago, it was un heard of,” Detective L.W. Hen ning said, “They didn’t want to sit in front of a judge and tell what happened. It’s a matter of macho image. But they are com ing out more. It’s a freer lifes tyle.” Henning said police now av erage about 10 homosexual rape complaints from men annually. He said the total is tiny com pared to the 1,000 or so heter osexual rapes reported by women. But he said five years ago there were no male rape reports. So far, Detective Donna Autry said, she knows of no female homosexual rape complaints. Technically, police call male- against-male sex attacks “sexual abuse” because Texas law de fines rape as applying only to Quirks in the News United Press International LARKSPUR, Calif. — When the Taiwan girl’s athletic ex change team began dancing in stead of dribbling, Redwood High School officials thought there was something wrong. The 13 youngsters were greeted at the airport and taken to the high school gym to throw a few hoops in preparation for a girl’s basketball team match. Taiwan’s students turned out to be an entertainment troupe instead of a sports squad. “They’re not athletes,” school Principal Jim Planretty said Wednesday. “But they can sure sing and dance.” Hanretty said after seeing the girls perform, the exchange error no longer mattered. “They’re sensational,” Han- retty said. “They even did a great rendition of ‘Oh Suzannah.’ He said Redwood High and Ining High School have had a longstanding “sister school” re lationship that has focused since 1978 on athletic exchanges. Jackie’s barn GAY HEAD, Mass. —Jackie Onassis, along with her contrac tor, was fined $50 for building a barn on her spacious Martha’s Vineyard estate without a prop erly completed building permit application. “It has nothing to do with who she is,” Board of Selectmen member William Vanderhoop Jr. said. “If you are going to do something here you’ve got to do it right.” The board met Tuesday night and levied the fine and ordered payment of the $100 permit. Builder Harry Garvey said he submitted the barn plan when Onassis said she wanted to build a $132,000 house for the care taker of her $3.5 million estate. man-against-woman situations, but officers say it is involuntary sexual intercourse, so the term rape fits. Last fall, police received four male rape complaints within a month’s time. One case involved a 23-year-old mentally retarded man who reported being forced into sex acts and then raped by a man who had “befriended” him. Henning said most of the cases reported involve victims who are openly homosexual or bisexual, but he said police had one recent case involving a heterosexual man who com plained he had been abducted and raped by another man. The suspect was not con victed. Henning said convictions are rare because many of the com plaints arise from disputes be tween male lovers, but he said police have put some offenders behind bars.
