Battalion/Page 14 February 5,1982 Thornton says Sherrill’s staff will be a winning combination by John Wagner Battalion Staff New Head Coach and Athletic Director Jackie Sherrill is a com petitor and a man who knows how to win, his associate athletic director told the Class of ’83 Thursday night. Charles T hornton told an au dience of about 40 people that Sherrill has assembled a staff that can get the job done, not only in football, but in each of the sports Texas A&M Universi ty competes in. “Our goal is to have an overall sports program that is a good as any in the country,” Thornton said. He said the process of building Texas A&M’s nation wide reputation has already begun. “We’re going to build an all purpose basketball arena in the near future. We have a commit ment from the Board of Regents for a feasibility study, which I would expect to take six to nine months. The earliest we could have it completed would be two years.” Thornton said. The are na would probably be located near the intramural fields, he added. Thornton said that Sherrill, who was originally scheduled to speak at the class meeting, was on a recruiting trip. The quality that makes Sherrill such a fine recruiter, Thornton said, is his ability to be himself. “I think Jackie is a good re cruiter because he relates so well to young people,” Thornton said. “You can sense that this man (Sherrill) means what he says. There’s not a phony bone in his body, and that shows.” He said Sherrill’s national reputation as a fine coach and recruiter will pay off, although he admitted that this year’s re cruiting effort will not be as good as in the years to come. Thornton said he was aware of the controversy surrounding the hiring of Sherrill and his staff, but he said this controver sy was unfounded for the most part. “There are 10 to 15 football coaches in the country that make more money than Coach Sher rill, and even some basketball coaches that make as much as him,” he said. Thornton said Sherrill’s base salary and other benefits are not as unusual in college athletics as they may seem. Thornton cautiously answered questions about next football season. “I’m not going to predict that we’ll go 8-3,” he said, “But I think we’re going to have a good team. We’ve got some good athletes here, and I think the football players are excited ab out next season.” Thornton said the Aggies would most likely use a pro-type offensive formation, because that would fit Aggie best. He said quarter! Kubiak is a good this formation he opportunity to throw. Thornton drew ; spouse from the audio he said: “I’ve been with ing team in the Cotton last two years, and with the host team Thornton came A&M from the Univel Alabama, which Baylor in the 19811 and lost to Texas int game. Thornton said he j the job of associate athlt: clot under Sherrill gave him a chance to 5 fessionally.
