This article explores the atti tudes of women in business — the obstacles and rewards they may find in the Brazos business community. by Angie Jones Battalion Reporter “My parents taught me two things,” Judith Rychlik of Bryan says. “They said: ‘There’s no such thing as can’t,’ (I really be lieve that) and ‘A person can do whatever they’re willing to pay the price to do.’” This attitude and a strong in terest in business motivated Rychlik to start her own busi ness, The Figure Salon, in Bryan in 1968. In 1979, she became only the second woman to serve as president of the Bryan- College Station Chamber of Commerce. When she started, she had few women role models. Classic Wedding Elegance. Evidence shows women are finding it easier to enter the tra ditionally male-dominated world. Nationally, women in managerial and administrative positions rose from 21 women per 100 men to 30 per 100 — an increase of 67 percent — be tween 1972 and 1978. Jimmy Brown, a commercial lending officer with First Bank and Trust of Bryan, said Brazos County has slightly more women in business than could be expected for such a traditional area. He said this trend is a result of a greater awareness among women of the opportunities open to them through corpora tions or private business. He also said he sees a greater civic awareness among business women. The two Bryan-College Sta- 50. off *7«4e /i'UdcU fco*Uiaue. 2304 Texas Ave. So. Loretta King, president of the Business and Professional Women’s Club, said the dub boasts 100 members induding doctors, lawyers, teachers, retail and other businesswomen. Dale Kelly is president of the American Business Women’s Association. Its 32 members represent women in education, private business and manage ment positions in other businesses. The gains U.S. women are making in the business world also are related directly to the higher level of education among women. Dr. Robert Skrabanek, de mographer and professor of sociology, cited a 1978 Census Bureau report showing that in 1970 only 68 women were enrol led in college for every 100 men. By 1978, the ratio had increased to 92 women per 100 men. He said in “The Growing Power of Women,” an article written recently, that the numerical balance between the sexes shif ted in favor of women for the first time in U.S. history in 1950. Today, women out number men in the United States by 6 million and the U.S. Census Bureau forecasts the dif ference could grow to more than 7 million by the year 2000. Current sex ratios for Brazos County are not available because 1980 census figures have not been released. But Skrabanek said the total number of males in Brazos County in 1970 was 31,733, while females num bered 26,245 — a ratio of 121 men to 100 women. Getting capital to begin a busi ness is a majpr problem for women because they have no track record of success like men do, but this can be overcome, said Vicki Keltner, owner of Small Business Publications of Houston. She said women must be will ing to take the same financial risks that men take to promote their careers. Once a woman has made her way into the business commun ity, whether by owning her own business or working in a com pany, it is essential for her to learn how to be a “team player,” Keltner and Rychlik agreed, but their theories for advancing this image are different. Keltner said a business woman’s attire is a key factor for success in any business, but espe cially in large corporations. In her most recent publica tion, the “Business Women’s Appearance Guide,” co authored with Houston clothes designer Mark Holsey, she says, “Women are still dressing for the bedroom, not the boar droom.” The book explains that men don’t know if a woman will wear a suit one day or a slinky dress slit to the waist the next.
