cocktail, then hijacked an Air
Florida jet to Cuba with a
cigarette lighter and a plastic
bottle he said contained gaso
line. Less than three hours later,
the passengers and crew had re
turned safely.
It was the first successful hi
jacking in the United States in
nearly seven months and Jack
Barker, a Federal Aviation
Administration spokesman said
it was “a routine hijacking — the
best kind.”
The takeover Tuesday of Air
Florida Flight 710 came about
20 minutes after it lef t Miami on
a short hop to Key West. The
Boeing 737 landed safely at 2:28
p.m. at Havana’s Jose Marti Air
port without incident. Cuban
security troops with machine
guns then boarded the plane,
took the unidentified hijacker
into custody and allowed other
passengers to shop for souve
nirs.
The plane returned to Key
West at 0:30 p.m. with all but the
hijacker safely aboard.
Fhe FBI had a roll of photos
of the hijacker taken during the
flight by a passenger, Russ
McLoughlin, 30, of New York.
He said that when his seat mate
pointed to the man: ”1 figured
that was the guy so I pulled out
my camera and started
shooting.”
Another passenger, Donna
Kelly, said: “He had a bottle of
gasoline and a Bic lighter and
said he was going to blow up the
plane unless he was flown to
Cuba.”
