Gov. Bill Clements said he was pleased and enthusiastic Thursday after Reagan in formed the GOP National Com mittee that Dallas was his choice for the party’s convention in 1984. “I’m confident that Dallas will offer full Texas hospitality to the convention,” said Clements, who had suggested Dallas as a possible convention site. Other GOP officials also hailed the president’s selection as a plus for Republicans and the state. A member of the state Re publican Party Executive Com mittee, state Rep. Jim Horn of Denton, saw the convention as a rare opportunity for Texans to participate in a national conven tion. “I couldn’t be more elated,” Horn said. “One of the things 1 really like about it is ... you don’t have to be a delegate or an alter nate to attend.” Fred Agnich, a former Dallas County Republican chairman, was among state party officials who tried to bring the 1980 con vention to Dallas. “We came very, very close back then,” he said. “Even at that time we had much better hotel Your Danskin Headquarters Manor East Mall 779-6718 Ken’s Automotive 421 S. Jerry Lane Jurek’s guilty plea outside the presence of jurors followed a bargaining arrange ment between his attorney, De- Witt County District Attorney Wiley Cheatham and State Judge Clarence Stevenson. The agreement assured that the 30- year-old man would not receive the death penalty for the 1973 strangulation of Wendy Adams of Cuero. Jurek testified Wednesday he took the policeman’s daughter from the Cuero municipal swim ming pool without her consent. In the plea bargain agreement, Jurek also admitted to attemp ting to have sexual intercourse with the girl before the killing, but he did not admit to that on the stand. His first appeal of his convic tion to the U.S. Supreme Court was consolidated into the 1976 ruling that the death penalty is not “cruel and unusual punish ment.” Jurek, whose earlier convic tion for the girl’s death was over- >00000 CAMPUS THEATER Noth Showing turned by the 5th CircuitCn of Appeals, signed a waiver: leasing his case from furfi appeal.
