The success of intramural
sports at Texas A&M is partly
due to a well-run Intramural Of
fice and eager participants. But
what many people don’t realize
is that much of this success is due
largely to the work of Dormitory
Intramural Chairmen. Intramu
ral Chairmen provide the vital
connection between participat
ing students and the Intramural
Office.
A dorm chairman is in charge
of recruiting and managing all
teams and individuals competing
in IM Sports from his or her
dorm. Each dorm has at least
one chairman, but some have
several.
The success of many dorm
teams depends to some extent on
the committment of dorm chair
men to their jobs, which consist
of daily and weekly tasks. They
must check their mailboxes in
East Kyle daily for information
from the IM Office and should
come by the Intramural Office
several times a week for new in
formation on upcoming events,
rule changes, postponements,
etc. Chairmen must check the
previous days’ scoring results for
accuracy and then check the next
days’ schedules for teams & indi
viduals competing from his/her
dorm.
Some chairmen report or post
scores of games in the dorm to
keep residents informed of cur
rent standings. They also alert
dorm members of upcoming
competition, making sure teams
understand the rules and their
obligations to appear or re
schedule.
Administration, is one of Crock
er’s Intramural Chairmen. Blair
said his job as Chairman helps
him meet a lot of people from all
around campus and helped him
establish a good rapport with
people. He enjoys learning how
Intramural Sports are organized
and run.
“Most people just go out and
play and never get involved in
the organization of it all,” Blair
said.
One very important task of the
chairman is to see when playoffs
begin, so the dorm can be
notified and ready. Finally, the
chairman’s job is to make himself
known and keep himself availa
ble to the members of his or her
dorm. He or she must keep them
informed and enthusiastic, relay
ing information and answering
questions about all aspects of the
Intramural-Recreational Sports
Program.
Amy Hauck, a sophomore Pre-
Med student is the Intramural
Chairman for Neeley Dorm, now
in first place for the Women’s
Class A All-Year Award. Hauck
said she is enjoying her job as
chairman because it gets her
more involved in dorm activities
as well as intramural activities.
Crocker Dorm is currently in
first place for the men’s Class A
All-Year Award. Richard Blair, a
sophomore majoring in Business
So, seek out your dorm intra
mural chairman and find out
what Intramural activities are
coming up and which ones you
would like to compete in this
semester. And when you find
your Intramural Chairman,
thank him or her for a great year

compiling the three individual
scores.
Competition will be in three
divisions: Men, Women, and
CoRec. Individual and team
champions will receive awards.
The entry fee is only $1 per
person and is due at registration
in the Intramural Office. Tomor
row is the last day to sign up for
the contest to be held next Tues
day from 7 to 9 p.m., so hurry
over to the IM Office (159 East

Intramural Chairmen
Working So You Can Play
Since being at A&M, I’ve
noticed at least one thing: Aggies
love to play! It doesn’t seem to
matter whether they play in an
organized intramural tourna
ment or in an informal pick up
game or match with friends.
The Intramural-Recreational
Sports Department offers oppor
tunities for both.. . . and more.
The Extramural Sports Clubs
provide opportunities for stu
dents to participate in intercol
legiate competition that cannot
be offered through the Athletic
Department.
Sports Clubs have three objec
tives: instruction, recreation,
and competition. Indeed, the
members of the Tae Kwon Do
club compete, but also instruct
newcomers who wish to learn
the skills of this martial art.
Other clubs are highly com
petitive, but always welcome
new members and the chance to
promote their sport by teaching
others how to play it. The em
phasis (instruction, competition,
or recreation) of any club de
pends on what the club members
decide to make it.
Currently, more than 25 clubs
and 45 teams are registered with
the Intramural Office. Below is a
list.

Students having a special in
terest in any of these activities
are encouraged to contact the IM
Office for information (845-
7826). If your favorite sport is not
listed, you’re welcome to initiate
a new club.
The Intramural Department
assists clubs in obtaining funds,
equipment, and scheduling facil
ities, but club members deter
mine the nature and degree of
activities. The Intramural De
partment also provides informa
tion and assistance, so that any
student with an interest can be
come involved.
So, if you’re an Aggie with a
special interest, you are en
couraged to participate in the
Extramural Sport Club program
while at A&M.
