Fewer quakes caused
fewer deaths in 1981
United Press International
GOLDEN, Colo. — The U.S.
Geological Survey says the num
ber of earthquakes worldwide
declined last year as compared
to 1980, and fewer people died
as a result.
The USGS National Earth
quake Information Service said
Tuesday only two significant
earthquakes occurred in the Un
ited States last year, compared
with 11 in 1980. Earthquakes
caused no U.S. deaths in 1981.
Waverly Person, NEIS
geophysicist, said the last quake-
related death in the United
States was on Nov. 29, 1975,
when two people died in a tidal
wave caused by a 7.2-magnitude
earthquake in Hawaii.
Worldwide, there were 50
significant earthquakes
(measuring 6.5 or more on th^i
Richter scale) last year, down*;
from 71 in 1980. The 198£;
death toll of 5,239 included}
4,500 killed in two separate-
quakes in Iran on June 11 ancL
July 28. *
There were 12 earthquake^*
throughout the world with mag^.'
nitudes of 7.0 or more in 198Ij)
far below the average of 19.
