master's staff encouraged a food
strike at one prison and caused
unrest among inmates at other
prisons.
The motion, Filed Monday,
seeks removal of special master
Vincent Nathan and his entire
staff. The state asked Justice to
schedule a hearing on the mo
tion within a month.
The motion contends W.
David Arnold, a prison monitor
on Nathan’s staff, encouraged
about 50 inmates at the Coffield
Unit to join in a strike to “make
the papers” and give prisons
adverse publicity.
It accuses Nathan and his
staff of failing to report weapons
and illegal goods found among
prisoners. Also of creating “evi-
oence” by encouraging inmates
and prison employees to give
statements and file lawsuits
against the state, burdening
prison administrators with un
reasonable requests, and
threatening to obtain court
orders unless prison officials go
along with unwarranted proce
dures.
