HOUSTON — The president
of a police union has been
urging poterttial recruits not to
join the Houston Police Depart
ment because of severe moral
and financial problems.
“If anybody calls us about
joining, we recommend they
join the Houston Fire Depart
ment.” said Bob Thomas, presi
dent of the Houston Police Pat
rolman’s Union. “It’s equal nav
and no one is suing you or shoot
ing at you.”
Thomas said Tuesday his
statements were not the official
union policy, “but more of an
informal stance taken by a con
sensus of the board.”
Police department officials
said the union’s advice has not
/affected the recruiting efforts.

Scruggs said the V-shaped
memorial will be built into the
ground in the mall between the
Lincoln Memorial and the
Washington Monument. The
memorial will extend 246 feet
on each side and have the 57,709
names of those who died in the
war inscribed in its polished
black granite walls, he said.
