Students were huddled all over their tables, While mental states became in creasingly unstable. The aroma of strong coffee filled the air Waiting to rid faces of blank stares and despair. Grade points were teetering — students worried with dread On the brink of disaster, one slip and they're dead Me with my history, Sue with her Stat Had just settled down for a study-break chat. When out in the street, there arose such a clatter. We jumped from the desk to see what was the matter. And up to the window I ran with a dash, Threw open the Venetians with a clattering crash. The light on the corner of two- eight-eighteen, Gave even my dusty old win dow a sheen. When what to my blood-shot eyes should appear, But my old senior friend with three six-packs of beer. His college days over — job offers coming quick I eyed him with envy—he made me feel sick. "How did you do it?" I asked him by name, "The all-nighter way," he was heard to exclaim. "On No-Doz, on Vivarin, on caf feine, on Coke, Pop every pill, but don't take a toke. In competing for grades, you can outrank them all. Now study and memorize—the writing's on the wall. As your brain cells before a ma jor test fly, When they meet with that Scan tron, it's too late to cry." So off with his experience and knowledge he flew. With his carload of buddies, that motley crew. And then, after blinking, I stood fast and stopped. There in the corner was my his tory prof. I rubbed my eyes, the sight was too real, The final is Thursday, is this time to appeal? Decked out in his tweeds, and his Oxford bow tie. He looked pretty smug and simply said, "Hi." Old tests from the quiz file were in his backpack, He threw them all at me and said, "I want 'em back." I took each one out and ex amined them all, Xeroxing costs wouldn't be small. Having skipped the review, not enough that I knew, The prof had popped in, just to see me through. As hours ticked by, the minutes they flew Seconds were precious — we had a lot to do. With the prof's master's degree and his Ph.D too, I would certainly pass — and be one of the few. He was cordial and helpful, a real nice old guy, He seemed to believe me when I told him I'd try. We worked through the dawn, the test was at ten, I wanted to ace it, that was my yen. Walked into the classroom, heard pre-test chatter, "You don't look worried," a friend said. "What's the matter?" The test was eight pages, and two hours long, Those hours were rough ones, but nothing went wrong. I finished the test, turned it in with a smile, And placed it on top of the do or-die pile. His last words to me were sim ple but true, "All-nighters aren't fun but they will get you through!" I DON'T KNOW ABOUT YOU > BUT THESE PRESS REHEARSALS ARE STARTING TO N\AKE FEEL JUST PLAIN SILLY...
