UAW to begin campaign
to turn its negative imagt

DETROIT — It’s not quite as
folksy as “Look for the union
label’ but the United Auto Work
ers Union hopes its television ad
campaign will improve its image.
The union takes to the airwaves
this week with a series of commer
cials starring its members and
featuring the strong message “The
UAW wants to make America
work again.’’
The spots also give credit to
auto companies for design and en
gineering improvements made
during the past few years.
Union spokesman Don Still
man said about $1 million worth of
television time will be purchased
in cities where the UAW has large
membership concentrations.
These cities include Detroit
and several other Michigan cities,
Cleveland, Buffalo, Chicago, Los
Angeles, St. Louis and Washing
ton, D.C., where there are “a few
people we want to reach,” Still
man said.

Sen. Edward Kennedy’s pres
idential campaign — will air on
evening news programs and other
selected shows.

Overdue debt dispute causes

NORWALK, Conn. — Police
have charged two men with kid
napping another man and coating
him with red paint, tar and feath
ers in an apparent dispute about
an overdue debt.
Police said 36-year-old Bernard
Sievert of Westport was “covered
from head to toe with red enamel
paint, a black tar-like substance
and feathers” when he walked into
police headquarters Monday
night.
Sievert had trouble breathing
and was taken to Norwalk Hospit
al, where he was listed in stable
condition.
While Sievert was working at
an imported car agency in South
Norwalk, detectives said, he was
pulled into an auto by two men
who claimed he owed one of them
money. Sievert was then taken to
