United Press International VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Some ironic recognition has come to artist Ed Roebuck, who defaced his paintings with spray paint to protest their auction. Roebuck sprayed 60 of his paintings last week with black x’s, shortly after learning that liens had been placed against them to collect three months’ back rent. Since then, the artist said Mon day, he’s been swamped with calls from buyers and galleries in Washington, D.C., and New York that want to display his work. Roebuck said: “People didn’t notice much when I made them, but they turned their heads when I destroyed them. It is our sick ness. ” Before his protest, Roebuck had sold only one painting at the Norfolk gallery where they were on display, but since then seven of the x-covered originals have been sold. “It seems like I screamed out to a lot of people, ” Roebuck said. Roebuck said he has refused an offer from an entrepreneur who sought permission to reprint one of the marred paintings on a T- shirt, and does not plan to raise the price of the works, which he valued at $30,000. ^DOOOOCO OOOOOOOOOOOCSOOOOOCOOOCO< ICOOOCOOSOOOOC-COOOCOOOCOOOOOOOCOOC ATTENTION! Chase Econometrics, a private economic forepasting firm, has predicted that 9.2 million cars will be sold during the model year, down from last month’s prediction of9.3 million. Concerned by such dismal fore casts, leaders of the United Auto Workers union have gathered in Detroit for a three-day meeting of the union’s executive board. The conference started Tuesday. Conference topics are likely to include ways to keep the the auto industry afloat. Two automakers — American Motors and International Harves ter — have requested concessions in advance of the next contract and other automakers have asked for the same treatment. But union leaders have stood firm against pressure from em ployers for takebacks similar to those granted Chrysler Corp. in the midst of its recent problems. Chase’s Automotive Economist Wesley Stuchlak said high interest rates are a major reason for the auto industry blues. “I guess that you have to expect the auto industry to recover when both the economy recovers and interest rates come down,’ ' he said. In Washington, deputy White House press secretary 1 I^arry Speakes told reporters that Presi dent Reagan’s economic plan is on target. The plan’s success can be seen in the declining inflation rate, he said. But, in direct contrast to rosy predictions, Lockheed of Burbank, Calif., anno Monday it will phase out tion of its L-1011 Tristar aidim move which will put 9,000 Lod heed employees out of work Board Chairman Roy Andes said only five of the $50 ml planes were ordered in thefirsl months of 1981 and orders! three others were canceled. Responding to questions about the unemployment rate of more than 8 percent, Speakes predicted an economic upsurge in the second half of 1982.
