BISD needs fill-in teachers

Increased enrollment in the
Bryan Independent School Dis
trict this year led to a shortage of
substitute teachers and has caused
the administration to change its
hiring standards, which means
some Texas A&M students may
qualify for employment.
Charles B. McGown, person
nel director for the Bryan district,
said additional full-time teachers,
had to he hired from the ranks of
substitute teachers because of the
growing number of students in
Bryan schools, which, in turn, led
to the shortage of substitute
teachers.
As a result, McGown said, the
administration is looking for indi
viduals with some college educa
tion and teaching experience to fill
the vacant positions. He said any
one who has taught a Sunday
school class. Cub Scouts or youth
group is considered to have had
teaching experience.
“Basically, we’ve always re
quired our substitute teachers to
have a college degree, but be
cause of the unusual shortage this
year, we re interviewing people
with fewer college hours, ” he said.
and on the amount of time they
work.
McGown said salaries begin at
$28 for one day of work. However,
if a substitute teacher were to fill
in six weeks in one place, he could
be paid as much as $56 a day dur
ing that time.
He said substitutes with a
teaching certificate or teaching ex
perience are paid more than the
beginning rate.
Texas A&M students can take
advantage of this opportunity over
the Christmas holidays because
Bryan schools will close Dec. 18
and reopen Jan. 4.
Anyone wishing to substitute
teach during the spring semester
should make sure to have at least
two open weekdays each week.
McGown said anything less than
this would not be worth the indi
vidual’s time.
Interested persons should con
tact McGown at the Educational
Services Building, 2200 Villa
Maria Road.
Applicants for the job must sub
mit a college transcript and under
go a tuberculosis skin test, he said.
