Special meeting may have to be called
Council awaits committee plaque vote
By NANCY WEATHERLEY
Battalion Staff
The MSC Council may call a
special meeting later this week to
decide on the placement of a pla
que honoring former students
who have given from $50,000 to
$100 million to Texas A&M Uni
versity, Doug Dedeker, president
of the Council, said.
At the scheduled Council
meeting Monday night, members
could not make a decision on the
Presidents Association plaque be
cause the Council had not re
ceived a recommendation from its
Building Studies Committee.
The committee handles all acti
vities involving the use of the
MSC, and based on a its recomen-
dations, the Council approves or
disapproves actions involving the
MSC.
Paul Fisher, vice president of
operations, told Council members
about the plaque, which the De
velopment Office would like hung
on the north wall of the MSC main
lounge.
The Development Office
brought the idea of the plaque,
which is 10 feet 3 inches by 15 feet
3 inches, to the attention of the
committee.
The committee will make a de
cision on the plaque tonight at
7:30.
Fisher said the Development
Office was asking for as prompt a
decision as possible. Construction
on the plaque has already started
and the office plans on unveiling
it during spring break.
The committee had asked the
Council for authority to make a
standing decision on the plaque so
a special meeting would not have
to be scheduled and an answer
could be given to the office as soon
as possible.
However, Council members
defeated the motion, with Dede
ker saying that since the Develop
ment Office and the Council had
worked together so well, the office
should have the benefit of a thor
ough discussion on the issue.
In other actions, the Council
passed a proposal for an MSC per
sonnel filing system, which will
help members know how they are
progressing within the organiza
tion. Also, the files will provide
information on where students
have gone once they’ve left the
university, for fund-raising pur
poses.
The system, to he kept by the
office of MSC Student Develop
ment, will contain personal infor
mation on Council and Directo
rate members in accordance with
the Family Educational Rights
and Privacy Act of 1974.
