By SUSAN FLORENCE Battalion Reporter Thanksgiving Day means more than just a turkey dinner and a chance for the Aggies to give the University of Texas football team indigestion. Thanksgiving is traditionally a day for family reunions, bountiful dinners and giving thanks for the blessings of the past year. Origin ally called the Harvest Festival, it is one of the oldest and most wide spread celebrations. The fourth Thursday in November was chosen for Thank sgiving when in 1789 George Washington proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day in honor of the newly established United States Constitution. Most Americans today base their celebration on the story of the Pilgrims who celebrated a bountiful harvest after learning how to farm the new land. Giving thanks has been impor tant throughout the history of America. In 1623, the Puritans de cided to set aside certain days for giving thanks to God. However, thanksgiving days of the past were much different from those of today. The early thank sgiving days were held for various occasions, usually to celebrate military victories or the birth of royal children. Today the traditional American Thanksgiving holiday includes a more-than-enough dinner of roast turkey, dressing or stuffing (de pending on what part of the coun try you’re from), yams, veget ables, pumpkin pie, the Macy’s parade and numerous football games. press 1)05 j For your photographs in The Battalion The Battalion is taking applications for photo graphers for the spring semester.
