Dr. Shirley Black, assistant professor of history, introduces the upcoming Mentors panel discussion Wednesday night concerning the career services and programs provided by several campus departments, such as the Academic Counseling Center. Mentors organization helps solve student career problems By RANDY CLEMENTS Battalion Stall Students with problems don’t need a run-around, Dr. Shirley Black of the volunteer advisor organization Mentors said Wednesday. “When a student has a prob lem,” she said, “the last thing needed is being sent to the wrong office. In an effort to avoid this, she said, nine representatives of stu dent service departments ex plained their career programs. Fred Dorn, with the Academic Couseling Center, said most stu dents coming to the center are concerned about study and read ing skills. The center, he said, offers counseling for academic sur vival, test skills and how to select a career. Dr. Charles Powell, with Handicapped Student Services, said career selection for the hand icapped must be clone even more carefully than non-handicapped students. “We ask the student what he would like to do,” he said. “If the student is restricted to a wheel chair, however, he must be able to handle the job physically as well as mentally. Another option for the student is Cooperative Educational Prog rams. The programs allow the 1 stu dent to work full time for a semes ter while getting scholastic credit. Karen Anders, with the Cooperative Education Programs, said the coop programs helps stu dents identify what field they want to go into. “Coop offers a break away from school and allows the student to see how theory is applied in indus try,” she said. Black said the referral informa tion is important, hut many stu dents only* want and need some one to talk, to.
