drug without a prescription for hu
man use, but they cannot promote
it. Before the legislation, the sale
of DMSO was legal only for
animals.
The drug, a product of wood
pulp, coal or oil, has been used for
years as an industrial solvent in
the manufacturing of plastics and
pesticides.
Food and Drug Administration
Commissioner Jere Goyan said:
“Industrial strength DSMO can
be poisonous whether ingested or
injected in unpurified forms, and
it can carry harmful, soluble subst
ances into the bloodstream.”
In a book on DMSO, Dr. C.D.
Katt said the drug was hailed in
the 1960s as a wonder drug having
“remarkable properties for treat
ing the ailments of man and
animals.
For 19 years, the FDA has
fought to keep DMSO from being
legalized, Katt said, but the admi
nistration hasn’t produced con
crete evidence that the drug has
harmed anyone.
Dr. Chauncy D. Leake of the
University of California Medical
Center said: “The FDA operates
under an act which seems to imply
that no drug is to be used by a
physician unless it is demons
trated to be absolutely safe and
effective. ”
Philip Lindeman, a representa
tive of the FDA, said he believes
that the administration doesn’t
approve of the drug’s use because
adequate scientific studies on hu
mans and animals aren’t available.
The drug isn’t used in the A.P.
Beutel Health Center, Director
Claude B. Goswick said. The cen
ter doesn’t use the drug because
patients don’t like it, since it

The College Station Planning
and Zoning Commission is ex
pected to recommend rezoning of
102 acres on the north side of
Southwest Parkway at 7 tonight in
City Hall.
The area is currently zoned as
single family residential. The de
veloper, J.W. Wood, originally
requested the area he rezoned to
general commercial, professional,
medium density apartments and
single family residential R-1A
(allowing a maximum 10 units an
acre instead of the 8 unit max
imum in single family residential).
The compromise woidd leave
all the residential area single fami
ly (8 units maximum) instead of
single family R-1A (10 units max
imum). City Planner Al Mayo said
the compromise seems to satisfy
