NOVEMBER 17, 1981 | I ij |i jSports i ' Wilson: ‘We deserve a chance’ Ags still have shot at bowl By RITCHIE PRIDDY Sports t'rlitor Ij The Texas Aggies are still enter- [ ..taining how l hopes despite Satur- li'klav s 10-7 loss to Arkansas. Coach Tom Wilson said Mon day in his weekly press conference that several howls are still in terested in the 5-4 Aggies. Wilson declined to mention the howls interested in the Aggies hut said a win over TCU this Saturday would likely bring an invitation. “We are talking to quite a few people. There are several howls that are interested in us. I woidd anticipate that if we heat TCU we’ll get a shot. Despite the possibility of howl hopes Wilson was still thinking ab out Saturday’s game. He was so emotionally drained after the game that he couldn’t meet with reporters in his regular post-game press conference. He did meet briefly with his players before turning them lose. He told them that when a person does everything they can to reach a goal and still fall short he has nothing to be ashamed of. “I told them that I was very proud of them and that they had no reason to hold their heads low. “I am just as proud of them after getting heat by Arkansas as I woidd he had we won. Wilson said fourth and one situations played a major role in the game. The Aggies had three such situations in the game hut converted only one. “There were two or three plays in the hall game that could have N N s > j I Recognized Student Organizations may now apply for storage space at Kyle Field. The first fourth down play he was speaking of came early in the ballgame. The Aggies were at the Hog 17 with 14:29 left in the first half facing a fourth and inches. Tailback Johnny Hector took Gary Kubiak’s pitch hut stumbled and Billy Ray Smith fell on him for a four-yard loss. The second play came with 4:56 left in the game. The Ags were on the Arkansas 41 with fourth and one. Kubiak kept hut was tackled behind the line. Wilson said that if he had to do it over again he would probably kick a field goal on the first play hut added that when the opposition plays a perfect game there’s not much you can do. “Of course I really don’t think there’s any excuses to he made (for the loss). Our football team played hard and played well. Arkansas played another perfect ballgame. The game was particularly dis appointing for Wilson. He said that since the Houston game his players were shooting for the Cot ton Bowl and had a good chance of achieving their goal. Everyone, he said, knew Arkansas stood in the way. Wilson and his staff had done everything they could have done to prepare the team for Arkansas and the end result was the best played game of the year. T don t think that it is as much concern for me (about his own dis appointment) as it is my concern for the players. When you ask them to do things and they do them and it still doesn’t turn out right. . . it just bothers me to keep asking them to do things, he said. “They deserve better than what they’ve got. You hate to see a group of guys play their hearts out and do everything you ask of them and come up short. ' Though the loss hurts, Wilson said that there would he no let down going into the final two games of the season, particularly the Texas game. “They, are competitors and when it comes time to compete they 11 he ready, he said. "Tve never had to worry about these guys being flat. “We re going to go into these last two games with the same emo tion and the same intensity that we have had in the past.” Tenacious Tyren 1 tiift pluito h\ Dorm Ti'ifdiiuil Junior guard Tyren Naulls of the Texas A&M basketball team puts up a shot during the Aggies’ 109-70 win Saturday over the Windsor Basketball Club of Canada.
