The sale began Oct. 20 and will continue until Christmas break, club President Bill Lovette said. The turkeys, bought wholesale from a national distributor, can he purchased for $1.49 per pound at the Poultry Research Farm, lo cated west on Highway 60. Money from sales will go to ward the general Agriculture Scholarship Fund and will help fi nance two scholarships for poultry science students. The two scholarships are the $1,000 Cecil B. Ryan Endowed Scholarship, and the $100 South eastern Poultry and Agriculture Association Scholarship, Both scholarships were established this year. Lovette said. The $1,000 scholarship was established in the name of Cecil B. Ryan, a former poultry science professor. Ryan was a member of the department for 35 years, Lovette said. The money raised from the tur key sales will also send six to 10 juniors and seniors to the annual meeting of the Southern Poultry Science Society in Atlanta. The club solicits orders from local businesses as well as from companies in Houston and San Antonio, Lovette said. Many of the companies buy the turkeys and give them to their employees, he said. Besides selling the birds, the club members pick them up from the distributor, unload, weigh and price the birds, Lovette said. They will also wrap the turkeys in a gift box. The club, an affiliate of the Southeastern Poultry Science and Agriculture Association, has been conducting the annual turkey sales since 1950.
