Police said security officers arrested the suspect at a motel across the street for stealing a wal let. He later was identified as a suspect in the knifing. There also were reports of two rapes but the police rape squad could not confirm them. Security at the area had been tight, with each ticket-holder frisked and the tickets checked under ultra-violet light for forger ies. At several of the group s pre vious tour stops, police reported finding guns, drugs and other dan gerous or illegal materials. One woman died of injuries suf fered in a fall at the Seattle concert and numerous others have been treated for drug overdoses. Many of the concert-goers had waited nearly eight hours for the British rock group and its famed lead singer, Mick Jagger, to appear for the first of two shows in Houston. When Jagger, 38, dressed in skin-tight yellow knickers with knee-pads and a blue jacket, jumped on the Astrodome stage, the 75,000 rock-and-rollers went into a frenzy. Jagger opened the 9:45 p.m. Wednesday show with the song “Under My Thumb.” The group, which was preceded by Houston’s Z.Z. Top, per formed on a purple-and-pink stage and runway adorned with a huge American flag, a red race car and near-falling leaning Tower of Pisa replica. Promoters sold out the Astro dome, which seats 51,000 for foot ball but more for concerts, for each of the two shows. Tickets were $18. Four of the five original mem bers of the band, on the rock music tour for 20 years, are still with the Stones: lead singer Jag ger, bass player Bill Wyman, drummer Charlie Watts, and guitar player Keith Richard. Judge exorcises devil from court CINEMA l&ll $2.00 “Skaggs shopping center/Across from A&M Friday After Yell Practice/Saturday At Midnight THE HILLS HAVE EVES Plus (What Else?) A Pink Panther Cartoon! United Press International DANBURY, Conn. — A judge threw the devil out of court, ruling the “demon defense” of a murder defendant who claimed he was possessed by Satan when he stab bed a friend to death cannot he used. “I’m not going to allow the de fense of demonic possession, Su perior Court Judge Robert J. Cal lahan told the lawyer for Arne Cheyenne Johnson on the open ing day of Johnson’s trial Wednesday. “Evidence of demonic posses sion is simply not relevant, ” Calla han said. For months, Johnson’s attorney had said he would make Johnson’s murder trial the first American court case to test the existence of the devil. But when defense lawyer Mar tin J. Minnella began questioning the first prospective juror about his religious beliefs, Callahan cut short his attempt at a legal prece dent. Prosecutors have treated the case as a simple case of homicide. But Minnella claims Johnson, 20, was possessed by the devil when he fatally stabbed his land lord and friend, Brookfield kennel manager Alan Bono, 40, in a Feb. 16 argument. Minnella had told Callahan he intended to prove demonic pos session by having priests testify at the trial. If Johnson was possessed by the devil when the slaying occurred, Minnella said, it would show the defendant did not intend to com mit a crime. But Callahan said testimony ab out religious beliefs regarding de mons was not reliable and would only confuse and mislead jurors, The question of a dcMiionic pos session defense surfaced whei Minnella asked the first prosper tive juror, Gerald Ryan if hewers Catholic and believed in the exist-; ence of a supreme being. Ryan said yes and Minnelli asked if he believed in the exist'- ence ofa demonic force. The ques tion raised objections from States Attorney Walter D. Flanagan,tk juror was excused and Callab ruled out the defense strategy. ; Minnella had said earlierk planned to call a number of priests to give testimony “heavily related to the beliefs and teachings oftk Catholic church, he said. Part of church dogma states “there is such a thing as demonic possession and it does in fact o- ist, the lawyer said. Minnella said Johnson, \vn performed odd jobs for Bono, be came possessed a year before tk murder when he was living witk the parents of his girlfriend, De bbie Glatzel, 26, and her 12 year- old brother. When the boy began suffering from visions of a dark figure witk cloven hoofs, Minnella says John son assumed it was the devil and challenged the apparition to “take me on. The lawyer said the spirit obliged. Authorities said the stabbing took place at Johnson’s Brookfield apartment where Bono, Glatzel and Johnson were having lunch When Bono made an obscene reference to Glatzel, witnesses said Johnson became enraged The two men scuffled and Bono was stabbed, police said. sA* 'sL* vly -vX" "X* "X* «X* *X* ®X* *Xr' nL* *X* X - * *X* *X* vj-" X* X - X* X* X X 4* 'T' , 'T* *T'* *T , ‘ *4** ^ * * * * *- * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * •jf- * * * * * * * TIRED OF COOKING 6* WASHING DISHES?
