Downtown Bryan (212 IN. Dean Krakel and Jasper Acker man are fighting a quixotic legal battle every centimeter of the way to the Supreme Court, saying fed eral law does not authorize the government to spend taxpayer money for propagandizing the metric conversion. Krakel is executive vice presi dent of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Ackerman, of Colorado Springs, Colo., is on the hall’s board of di rectors. The hall contains western paintings and sculpture, rodeo mementos and pioneer artifacts. In a petition released Monday by the Supreme Court, Krakel and Ackerman argued the Amer ican people “do not want forced upon them any system of weights and measurements that comes from a foreign country or coun tries whose institutions and poli tical beliefs are foreign and repug nant to them, even though cod dled by the bureaucrats who infest our national government.” The metric system originated in France in 1799. It has since been adopted by most technolo gically developed nations. The United States has taken steps to encourage voluntary conversion to metric, but has not made it mandatory. Under the metric system of weights and measures, fractions and multiples of metric units are related to each other by multiples of 10, allowing conversion from one unit to another simply by shifting a decimal point. Krakel said he believes the metric system would “wipe out the entire westward movement.” He added: “The country mile and a bushel and a peck would dis appear. ” The two men filed suit 2 and one-half years ago in an effort to stop the National Bureau of Stan dards from spending public funds to encourage metric conversion. A federal judge threw out their case on grounds they did not have legal standing to bring the suit be fore the court. * * * LOCATED BEHIND THE POST OFFICE IN THE MSC, RUMOURS SERVES LUNCH DAI LY FROM 9 UNTIL 3.
