TEXAS 946-0945 By RITCHIE PRIDDY Sports Editor Saturday’s game with the Rice }wls means more than just a Itance for a little revenge for the s. It means a chance for the op spot for the Aggies in this ear s wild race for the conference rown. Ofcourse, that depends on louston beating Arkansas. Arkansas, Texas A&M and Rice tare the conference lead with 2-1 rads. Texas is second at 1-1; laylor is third at 2-2. SMU, of course, is undefeated utis ineligible for the conference tampionship. They have and will ontinue to play an important role the championship race. Arkansas plays host to Houston aturday, while A&M is at Rice, winner will be the front run- ler for the crown, at least for a week or so. If Arkansas wins there Will be a two team tie for the lead, along with the Owl-Aggie winner. However, there is still a lot of foot- hall to be played this year. The Aggies will be out for a little wenge for last year’s embarras sing 10-6 loss to Rice. Rice scored all of its points in the second quar ter last year on a 41-yard td run by Calvin Fance and a 34-yard field al by Kenneth Sam. A&M scored its points on a five- yard run by Johnny Hector in the third period. Although the Aggies outgained the Owls 295 total yards to 179 it was the Owls who had enough points on the scoreboard to win, snapping a six-game winning streak for the Aggies over Rice. Randy Hertel was the quarter- hack then but has since departed 'ia graduation. Junior college transfer Michael Calhoun is the new man and has filled in well, passing for over 700 yards so far this season. Calhoun’s latest accomplish ments include eight touchdown passes in the last two ballgames, something that doesn’t seem to happen a lot anymore. Calhoun can run as well and has accounted for over 1000 yards in total ofiense in six games, second only to TCU’s Steve Stamp. We’ve always known Michael Calhoun could run the ball well,” linebacker Bobby Strogen said, be never played against him, hut I can see his speed and quick ness. He also has the ability to pull up and throw on the run.” Michael Calhoun Calhoun hurt his ankle against Tech last weekend and has been put on a day-to-day basis for Satur day’s game. All indications, however, are that he will be ready for the Aggies. Strogen said the Aggies will be looking for Calhoun to throw a lot to 6-8 tight end Robert Hubble. Hubble always seems to have a good game against the Aggies and it will take a tremendous effort to keep him in check. Rice’s leading receiver is Hosea Fortune, who has caught 14 passes for 194 yards and six touchdowns and should also see plenty of ac tion Saturday. The Owls have won three games in a row since losing their first three which really shouldn’t come to surprise anyone. The only thing that could be a surprise, and maybe not for long, is the fact that Rice is no longer the doormat of the conference. The Aggies are prepared for the Owls according to Strogen, but aren’t expecting a wide open ball- game.
