The pair landed Sunday on an offshore Georgia island. Shoecraft said that help from the air traffic controllers was cri tical since it was impossible for the balloonists to determine the direc tion of their flight. “Even though we had a com pass, we could only tell which way the gondola was facing,” he said. Shoecraft also complimented an official in the National Weather Service office in Denver for help ing plot wind currents. He and Gorrell, both of Scott sdale, Ariz., said the landing — only a few feet from the waters of the Atlantic — on Blackboard Is land was “on target. ” He said they picked Georgia as a landing area and carried “only flags from Cali fornia and Georgia. ” Shoecraft said the landing was “right exciting. ” He said the gon dola was designed so it could be detached if it appeared the land ing site was going to he passed. “It looked like we were going to miss the beach on coming in,” he said. “Rather than do that, we de cided to drop from three feet. Now, that doesn’t sound like much, but when you drop a car from three feet things can bounce around pretty good. ” The 10-story-high balloon pas sed through upper atmosphere temperatures of 40 degrees below zero on the 2,515-mile journey that began in Costa Mesa, Calif. It took the adventurers 55 hours and 25 minutes — from Fri day to Sunday — to completellj journey in their huge balloondil bed “Superchicken III.” Gorrell said he and ShoecnS — dressed in five layers of dn thing and electric socks—-lip from the gondola and “jumpedi and down” after a “very smootf landing Sunday just 200 yard from the warm ocean wat| Then they planted a “Supercliitl en” flag in Blackbeard IslanJi sand to mark their feat Three hours later, they wen- picked up and taken backtotlitl mainland, where they had tkf first good night’s sleep since eaA Friday. ''The biggest reward of tlx flight is finally making it—acta ing a goal we set off to do. sail Shoecraft, who had attemptedli* crosscountry flight twice beforel '1 couldn’t have imagined a moitl successful outcome for a eoast-tw coast flight to land on thehead’l Asked about their future plaisl and a possible future flightof'sJ perchicken IV. ” Gorrell said:“Wtl don t know, hut it seems kind of* shame to leave it in the garage,! doesn’t it?” Gorrel said: “I think the colli was the thing that surprised inti the most. Of course we were oil oxygen all the time. Youean'teatT sleep drink or do anything dsel without oxygen. Have you evetl tried to spread honey at l] below?” Balloon experts say the flight I which cost the pair an estimatdj $80, (XK), is the second across I North America, hut the firstcoast l to-coast flight made within US l borders. (t^H Maxie Anderson and his son,a Kris, of Albuquerque, N.M.,arei credited with the first crosscom-l try flight from San Francisco to thf I eastern tip of Canada in Aprf| 1980. This was the third cross country attempt for Shoecraft. who learned ballooning from Gor rell. It was GorrcII’s first transcol tinental attempt. Buy your own cell block with bunks for $2,000 For United Press International GLENROCK, Wyo. — sale: one old jail. “It’s old-fashioned, and it’s a pretty nice piece of work,” said Gus Anderson of Demolition Con tractors in Casper, who salvaged the jail from the old Glenrock Town Hall. Anderson estimated the jail is at least 80 years old, since the heavy steel slats that hold the 13- by-13-foot structure together arc riveted instead of welded. “It has quite a bit of historyin it,” he said. Originally the Lusk Town Jailat the turn of the century, the jail has two cells with bunks and hand- operated locks, Anderson said, The price is $2,000, and Ander son hopes it will be sold to some one with a historical interest.
