Dodgers celebrate win
but give Astros credit .
United Press International
LOS ANGELES — By the
amount of champagne and laugh
ter, you would have thought the
Los Angeles Dodgers had won the
World Series instead of just the
NL West playoff series.
Despite the Montreal Expos
still standing in their way for a
possible return to the Fall Classic
for the first time since 1978, the
Dodgers opened the champagne
and acted crazy Sunday out of re
lief that the series against the
Houston Astros was over.
As Jerry Reuss, who had just
pitched a five-hitter in the 4-0 vic
tory over the Astros to clinch the
National League West title, put it,
“We’re not just celebrating this
win. It’s a fact that this season is so
different than any that has trans
pired before, we’re on an emo
tional high.”
What the Dodgers’ left-hander
was referring to was the complica
tions brought on by baseball’s first
mid-season strike.
“The commissioner declared us
the first-half winners. We didn’t
feel like we won it,” Reuss ex
plained. “Now we have more
satisfaction.”
“We just wanted to keep alive
and beat the team that beat us out
last year,” Reuss said of the
weekend series that may be re
membered as the “Miracle at
Chavez Ravine.”
Rick Monday, who singled in
the Dodgers’ first run in their big
three-run sixth inning, added, “If ,*
you look at the five games just
played between the Dodgers and
the Astros, you won’t see a better
platform to watch baseball. Three
of the five games were Hall of
Earners, pitching-wise.”
When asked if the champagne T
the Dodgers were celebrating 7
with was a vintage year, Monday
expressed another frustration. “It £
ought to be. It’s been sitting there V
for 12 months,” he said.
He was referring to the fact that >s
the Astros, after losing three >
straight to the Dodgers in 1980 to %
force a playoff game, denied Los
Angeles a chance of advancing to >
the pennant with a 7-1 victory in
the one-game playoff. ~

How ’bout them Ags!
Aggie cornerback Greg Williams falls to the turf after block
ing an Omar Perez field goal attempt early in the fourth
quarter in Saturday’s 7-6 win over the Houston Cougars.
Holder Greg Harmon looks on in horror as he sees Williams
block the kick. Although the Cougars scored later, the Aggie
defense held the high-powered Cougar offense in check for
the better part of the ball game, giving Texas A&M its fourth
win of the year and its third one-point win.
