Chicago
clergy offer
alternative
United Press International
LOMBARD, Ill. — Moderate
Christian clergymen said Satur
day they are organizing an alterna
tive to the Moral Majority because
the church cannot be classified as
politically “left or right.
The Chicagoland Committee
on Fair Play, made up of some 100
Chicago area ministers and
priests, said it is trying to influ
ence the nation’s political scene
without employing the tactics of
the New Christian Right, which it
said is “narrow minded,”
“The church is not merely on
the side of the political right or
left,” the group said.
“We do not demand that our
convictions dominate public edu
cation, public television, or
attempt to establish censorship
over those who disagree, or who
control the public sector.”
The committee issued a series
of position statements it said will
show the New Christian Right is
not the only group that is “pro
human, pro-justice, pro-creation,
pro-morality, pro-nation, pro
peace and pro-human rights.”
The group said it:
—Deplores “the devaluation of
personhood, whether by irrespon
sible abortion, genetic manipula
tion, infanticide, euthanasia,
capital punishment, economic
manipulation or nuclear prolifera
tion.”
—Deplores “the exploitation of
the Earth resulting in air and wa
ter pollution, the depletion of
natural resources, the impover
ishment of peoples, the extinction
of wildlife and natural habitats and
the socially uninhibited use of the
land.”
“We should be critical of our
country in order to change it to
ward its ideal vision; we must love
our country enough to think it
worth changing,” the group said.
The committee, which first be
gan organizing last winter, is led
by the Rev. Jack W. Lundin, pas
tor of the Community of Christ the
Servant.

Trustee

United Press International
KALAMAZOO, Midi —Wed
ded bliss was short-lived for Saun
ders Grim. He thought he was
going on his honeymoon but en
ded up back in jail.
The 30-year-old prison camp
escapee was arrested Wednesday
— the day Kalamazoo County offi
cials saw his name under the
“Marriage Licenses” section of the
local newspaper.
Two weeks earlier Grim had
walked away from the Grass Lake,
Mich., prison camp where he was
serving a 10-year sentence for
burglary. As a trustee at the camp
he was given periodic furloughs,
