Page 4 THE BATTALION MONDAY, OCTOBER 12, 1981 Local Audience ignited as Commodores explode By JANE G. BRUST Battalion Staff With rising smoke on the stage and flashing lights above, the Commodores literally exploded in G. Rollie White Coliseum Friday night. Their concert, presented by the MSC Town Hall Commit tee, transformed Aggieland into what the group called Commod ore Country. A variety of soul and funk tunes contrasted to sultry love ballads to entertain a packed house of8,000. As if warming up to stand during yell practice and the football game, the Commodores’ audience stood throughout most of the con cert. But they didn’t just stand there. People clapped, whooped and boogied through the concert, generally going wild. The Com modores thoughtfully made sure the audience enjoyed itself by periodically asking, “Is everyone havin’ a good time?” Anyone who had even momentarily sat down was thus encouraged to get up again. Funky hits such as “Brick House” and “Too Hot Ta Trot” featured the Commodores danc ing across every square inch of the stage in their silvery sequined suits. Lead singer Lionel Ritchie de lighted the crowd in announcing he would sing a duet — with the audience — of “Easy.” In another duet, “Endless Love,” Ritchie harmonized with backup vocal Debra Thomas. The two bodies embraced as their sexy voices blended to sing, “I know I’ve found in you my endless love,” bringing a briefly quieted crowd back to its feet in a standing ovation. Ritchie charmed the audience with another popular love ballad singing, “ ... I do love you still.” Individuals could easily recall memories of a first love and swal low them again like a smooth, rich wine. The only problem with the con cert was the Commodores’ singing for only one hour, 15 minutes. But if the concert had gone on much longer, the Commodore worshipping crowd may never have let the group get away. Looking for an International living and working experience?
